Who is Paul O'Grady?

Paul James O'Grady MBE DL, born on June 14th, 1955 and passed away on March 28th, 2023, was a multi-talented English personality known for his work as a comedian, broadcaster, actor, writer, and drag queen. He gained prominence in the London gay community in the 1980s by performing as his drag alter ego, Lily Savage, and later gained wider recognition in the 1990s.

In the 2000s, O'Grady abandoned the Lily Savage persona and became the host of several television and radio programs, including The Paul O'Grady Show. Paul O'Grady, who was born to a working-class Irish migrant family in Tranmere, Cheshire, relocated to London in the late 1970s, where he initially worked as a peripatetic care officer for Camden Council.

He created his drag act in 1978, drawing inspiration from traits he had observed among female relatives, and joined the Playgirls, a drag mime duo, to tour England. After being nominated for the 1992 Perrier Award, O'Grady gained mainstream recognition and appeared on television, radio, and stage productions.

The cause of death of TV presenter and comedian Paul O'Grady, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 67, has been confirmed. According to his death certificate the entertainer, who resided in Kent, died from sudden cardiac arrhythmia. Paul O'Grady's death is suspected to be associated with ischemic heart disease. The presenter, who was well-known for his love and advocacy for animals, received an outpouring of tributes following his passing. 

Paul's partner Andre Portasio says, "It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening. We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion. I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years."

In 2015, he expressed to a journalist that despite being wealthy, he still identified as working-class and had a mindset of constantly worrying about being able to pay rent.

Raised as a Roman Catholic, he revealed in his autobiography that he had "grown out of Catholicism" following his mother's passing, but had an enduring fascination with alternative religions, including Wicca. He has claimed to have witnessed unidentified lights above his residence in Kent and speculated that he may have been under observation by extraterrestrial beings.
