"Persona 5" is a video game where you play as a high school student named Joker in modern-day Tokyo. The game follows a day-night cycle and weather patterns, similar to a life simulation game. His actions affect his social stats, unlocking more activities and options. Joker can also build relationships, known as "Confidants," with other characters, leading to potential romances and special combat abilities.
In the game, you'll explore two types of dungeons in a realm called the Metaverse: Palaces, which are story-specific, and Mementos, a randomly generated dungeon. Both are filled with Shadows, representations of suppressed thoughts based on myths and religions. You can complete quests in Mementos and use stealth to avoid Shadows. Joker has a special ability called "Third Eye" to help solve puzzles and identify interactable objects and enemy strength. Safe Rooms within Palaces allow you to save and fast travel.
Combat follows a turn-based system, where you can initiate battles by encountering enemies or launching an ambush for an advantage. If all enemies are down, you can trigger a powerful "All-Out Attack" negotiate for money, and items, or even recruit the enemy as a Persona. Losing all health points knocks out a party member, and if Joker goes down, the game ends.
You can acquire new Personas through successful negotiation in battle. Different Persona types are linked to Confidant relationships. The Velvet Room is where you fuse Personas, combining their skills and stats. Sacrificing a Persona can create items or grant experience to another Persona. You can also send a Persona for intensive training to gain skills faster.
The game includes a minor multiplayer feature called the "Thieves Guild," allowing players to see each other's activities and offer help in the Metaverse.
