Born on June 22, 1947, Maravich's basketball journey began to flourish during his college years at Louisiana State University (LSU), where his father, Press Maravich, served as the head coach of the Tigers basketball team.

Maravich's college career was nothing short of extraordinary. He became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I history, amassing an impressive 3,667 points with an average of 44.2 points per game. 

Notably, these accomplishments were achieved in an era before the introduction of the three-point line and shot clock. Despite facing the restriction of not being able to play varsity as a freshman under the NCAA rules at that time, Maravich's skill and scoring prowess were undeniable.

• Peter Press Maravich, famously known as "Pistol" Pete Maravich, was born to Petar "Press" Maravich (1915–1987) and Helen Gravor Maravich (1925–1974) in Aliquippa, a steel town near Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania. 
• Maravich's early connection with basketball became evident as he amazed family and friends with his exceptional skills from a young age. His father, Press Maravich, played a significant role in nurturing Pete's talent and fostering his passion for the sport. 
• Press, himself the son of Serbian immigrants, was a former professional player turned coach, providing young Pete with a strong foundation in basketball fundamentals.
• The Maravich family's move to Central, South Carolina, saw Pete playing high school varsity basketball at Daniel High School even before reaching the eligible age for attendance.
•  During this time, he participated in the school's historic first-ever game against a team from an all-black school. 
• In 1963, Press Maravich transitioned from his coaching position at Clemson University to North Carolina State University, leading the family to Raleigh, North Carolina. 
• It was here, at Needham B. Broughton High School, that Pete Maravich acquired his iconic nickname, "Pistol," owing to his distinctive shooting style resembling holding a revolver.
