Pokemon Gameplay

Throughout the history of Pokémon games, one consistent feature is the player's choice of a "starter Pokémon" at the beginning of their adventure. These games allow players to choose from three Pokémon types - Grass, Fire, or Water - that are native to the region in which the game is set. For example, in Pokémon Red and Blue, the options are Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle.

In Pokémon Yellow, however, players start with Pikachu instead of choosing from the usual three starters, but can still obtain the original starters later in the game. There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as in Pokémon Black and White, where there are two rivals - one chooses the Pokémon with a type advantage over the player, while the other chooses the Pokémon with a type disadvantage.

In most games, the player's rival will choose the Pokémon type that has a type advantage over the player's chosen Pokémon. This means that if the player chooses Charmander, the rival will choose Squirtle. However, this does not affect the first battle between the two, as they can only use Normal-type attacks at that point.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, another trainer chooses the Pokémon with a type disadvantage to the player's chosen Pokémon, but they never battle the player directly. In Pokémon X and Y, there are four rivals, with two of them receiving starter Pokémon in a similar arrangement to Black and White, while the other two have completely different Pokémon.
