After a recent break-up, graduate student Emma Taylor moves to New York City to start afresh. Soon after settling into her new Brooklyn apartment, someone starts hacking all of her electronic devices and spying on her through the cameras. Emma meets Michael, and they begin dating, but after the hacker steals private photos of her with Michael and sends her fake messages and videos pretending to be Michael, Emma becomes suspicious and avoids him.
One night while Emma is out clubbing with her friend, the hacker breaks into her apartment, and when Emma returns home, she finds her cat dead. Emma becomes increasingly isolated and depressed as the police can't do anything about the situation.
