Red Balloon Kdrama Review

Red Balloon shares many similarities with the popular Taiwanese BL movie Your Name Engraved Herein, making it feel like a spiritual predecessor in many ways. Both stories explore poignant high school romances led by a confused protagonist struggling with repressed sexuality, and both feature dreamy actor Edward Chen, whose character in Red Balloon could be easily transposed into Your Name Engraved Herein. However, while Your Name Engraved Herein is superior in terms of budget, acting, and nuanced storytelling, Red Balloon still stands firmly on its own merits as a solid love story that portrays intricate feelings, sensitive characters, and raw vulnerability.

Although the romance in Red Balloon has a good foundation, it could have delved deeper. The relationship between the main characters is built up nicely, but just as their passion gets ignited, the love story halts momentum, leaving the audience wanting more. The narrative mostly takes place in the past, where the two leads portray their teenage romance charmingly, but it is the present timeline featuring the older versions of the characters that truly captures the audience's attention with its powerful emotions, rich melancholy, vulnerability, and sexual tension. Despite the adult counterparts sharing exciting chemistry in their few scenes together, it would have been better to see more interactions between them.
