In January 2005, he transferred to Liverpool for a £750,000 fee and earned a call-up to the England senior team later that year. Carson contributed to Liverpool's success, making nine appearances, including the UEFA Champions League quarter-final victory over Juventus in April 2005. He went on successive loan spells to Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, and Aston Villa to enhance his experience.

Returning to Liverpool from Aston Villa in 2008, Carson joined West Bromwich Albion for a £3.25 million fee in July. In 2011, he made a move to Bursaspor in Turkey, spending two years before returning to England with Wigan Athletic.
