Scream 6 Ending Explained

The conclusion of Scream 6 unveils the identities and motivations of the Ghostface killers, while also suggesting that the horror will continue in the future. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, Scream 6 brings back Samantha and Tara Carpenter, who has relocated to New York City for college. The film has received mostly positive reviews and is being praised for its enjoyable, gory contribution to the Scream franchise.

In the climax of Scream 6, Sam, Tara, Chad, and Kirby are trapped inside a movie theater. Detective Bailey contacts Sam and warns her that Kirby is unstable and cannot be trusted, leading Sam, Tara, and Chad to briefly turn on Kirby. However, it's later revealed that she is not the killer and that multiple killers have infiltrated the theater. Detective Bailey confesses that he worked with Quinn and Ethan, his own children, to murder Sam. After a brawl, Sam, who wears her father's Ghostface mask, successfully kills Quinn and Bailey, while Tara and Kirby defeat Ethan. As Sam departs, she leaves Billy Loomis' mask behind and walks away with Tara.

Who is the killer in Scream 6?

In Scream 6, the identities of the Ghostface killers and their motivations are revealed. Jason, Ethan, Quinn, and Detective Bailey are all unmasked as Ghostface, while Greg is revealed to be a wannabe killer. The movie begins with Jason making the first kill, but he soon becomes hunted when a different Ghostface stops his killing spree. It is later revealed that Jason and Greg were both obsessed with Scream 5 killer, Richie, and wanted to complete the film he was working on by murdering the Carpenter sisters.

Ethan, Quinn, and Detective Bailey's murderous rampage are also driven by their relation to Richie. They are revealed to be his brother, sister, and father, respectively, seeking revenge against Sam Carpenter for killing Richie in Scream 5. Despite Quinn's apparent death earlier in the movie, it is revealed that she switched out her body to avoid detection and continue her killing spree with Ethan.

In the end, all of the Ghostface killers are killed by those they were hunting. Sam shoots Quinn, Tara stabs Ethan in the mouth, and Kirby finishes him off with a television set. Detective Bailey is killed when Sam stabs him repeatedly before delivering the fatal blow through his eye.

Scream 6 plot

In New York City, Film studies professor Laura Crane is lured out of a bar and killed by her student, Jason Carvey, who was wearing a Ghostface costume. Jason had planned to kill the Carpenter sisters with his roommate Greg, but he receives a call from a different Ghostface who had murdered Greg and subsequently stabs Jason to death.

Sam Carpenter, along with her sister Tara, roommate Quinn Bailey, twins Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin, Mindy's girlfriend Anika, and Chad's roommate Ethan, now live in New York City. Due to an online conspiracy theory, Sam is often ostracized in public for supposedly framing Richie Kirsch for the most recent Woodsboro killings. Detective Wayne Bailey, Quinn's father, calls Sam in for questioning as her ID was found at the scene of Jason's murder along with the Ghostface mask used by Richie and Amber Freeman. On her way to the station, Sam is called by Ghostface from Richie's phone, who then attacks Tara and kills multiple bystanders.

At the station, the sisters meet with FBI special agent Kirby Reed, a survivor of the 2011 Woodsboro killings, and Gale Weathers, who reveals that Sidney Prescott has gone into hiding in response to the recent attacks. Dr. Stone is murdered by Ghostface, who steals Sam's file and leaves another mask used in the 2011 killings. Ghostface later attacks Quinn in Sam and Tara’s apartment and eventually kills Anika, but Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad escape with the help of Sam's neighbor and boyfriend, Danny.

Following Quinn's death, Detective Bailey is taken off the case but vows to help avenge his daughter. Gale takes the group to an abandoned cinema she found, which has been set up as a shrine to the Ghostface killers, including weapons and outfits from each set of attacks. Ghostface torments Gale about the death of Dewey before killing her boyfriend and attacking her. Tara and Sam arrive in time to stop Ghostface from killing Gale.

The group agrees to meet Kirby at the theater to trap Ghostface. On the subway platform, they are separated, and Mindy is attacked by the killer. At the theater, Sam sees a vision of her father Billy Loomis, who reminds her to defend herself and not trust anyone. Taking Billy's knife from the original murders, Sam realizes they have been locked inside.
