About Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. They are a member of Major League Baseball (MLB) and compete in the American League West division. The franchise was established in 1977 as an expansion team and initially played their home games in the Kingdome. Since 1999, their home ballpark has been T-Mobile Park, located in the SoDo neighborhood of Seattle.

The team's name, Mariners, reflects the strong marine culture in the city of Seattle. They are often referred to as the M's and have a primary logo featuring the letter "M" from 1987 to 1992. The Mariners changed their team colors to navy blue, northwest green (teal), and silver before the 1993 season, replacing their original royal blue and gold colors (though the original colors are still used in alternate uniforms). The Mariner Moose serves as the team's mascot.

In their early years, the Mariners struggled to field a winning team and didn't experience significant success until the late 1990s. Led by notable players such as Edgar Martinez, Ken Griffey Jr., and Randy Johnson, the Mariners made their first playoff appearance in 1995. They won their division championship that year and advanced to the American League Division Series (ALDS), where they defeated the New York Yankees in a memorable series. Martinez's walk-off hit in Game 5, driving home Griffey in the 11th inning, is considered a historic moment in team history.

The Mariners went on to win their second division title in 1997. Following the departures of Griffey, Johnson, and Alex Rodriguez, the Mariners signed Ichiro Suzuki and achieved great success in 2001. They won 116 games that season, setting the American League record for most wins in a single season and tying the Major League record set by the 1906 Chicago Cubs.

Despite their remarkable regular season, the Mariners' postseason run ended in disappointment, and they did not make the playoffs again until 2022, ending the longest active postseason drought in major North American sports. Throughout their history, the Mariners have faced various challenges and have finished with a losing record in the majority of their seasons.

They are the only active MLB franchise that has never appeared in the World Series, holding the longest active World Series appearance drought in the league.  As of 2022, the Mariners' all-time win-loss record stands at 3,402-3,783 (.473). The team continues to strive for success and remains a beloved part of the Seattle sports community, with fans eagerly supporting them in their pursuit of postseason glory.

Seattle Mariners History

The Seattle Mariners have a rich history in Major League Baseball (MLB) since their establishment as an expansion team in 1977. Throughout the years, the Mariners have showcased exceptional talent, experienced memorable moments, and have had their fair share of ups and downs. The Mariners played their first game on April 6, 1977, against the California Angels.

Although they have yet to win a World Series championship, the team has made the playoffs on four occasions. The most notable season in Mariners history was in 1995 when they won a remarkable 116 games, tying the MLB record for most wins in a single season at that time. They advanced to the American League Championship Series (ALCS) but fell short of reaching the World Series.

The Mariners have been home to several iconic players who have left a lasting impact on the franchise and the sport. Ken Griffey Jr., often referred to as "The Kid," is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He became a Hall of Famer with his exceptional skills and electrifying play. Edgar Martinez, known for his prowess as a designated hitter, is a two-time American League batting champion and is considered one of the best in that position in baseball history.

Ichiro Suzuki, a legendary Japanese outfielder, made a significant impact with his exceptional defensive skills, speed, and record-breaking achievements, becoming the all-time hits leader for a Japanese-born player. Felix Hernandez, fondly known as "King Felix," is a two-time Cy Young Award winner and has established himself as one of the premier pitchers in the game.

In recent years, the Mariners have faced challenges, but they have a young and talented roster that shows promise for the future. With a renewed focus on player development and strategic moves, the team is aiming to return to the playoffs and compete for championships in the coming years. Despite the absence of a World Series title, the Seattle Mariners have left an indelible mark on the sport of baseball.

They continue to captivate fans with their exciting play, perseverance, and dedication to success. Mariners fans remain passionate and optimistic, eagerly supporting their team as they strive to bring championship glory to the city of Seattle.
