The first season of Shadow and Bone successfully brought together the different parts of the Grishaverse - the Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows duology - in a cohesive and effective way. Season 2, consisting of eight episodes, continues to do the same by seamlessly blending aspects of Bardugo's trilogy and the Crows' story, while also adding a fresh perspective to the narrative. Despite being a familiar story for readers of the books, the changes made in the adaptation make it a worthwhile and captivating watch. Synopsis of Shadow and Bone TV Series
The Grisha universe encompasses several fictional nations, including Ravka, Fjerda, Shu Han, Kerch, Novyi Zem, and the Wandering Isle. Each nation is inspired by real-world countries from different time periods and has its own unique language, culture, and traditions. Grisha is people with magical abilities who refer to their powers as "The Small Science," which allows them to manipulate matter at the molecular level.
Ravka is the primary home of the Grisha, who are discovered by traveling Grisha testers and brought to the Second Army to train. Grisha is divided into three orders when training for the Second Army. Etherealki control natural elements such as wind, water, and fire; Materialki control materials such as metal and glass; and Corporalki manipulates people's bodies. General Kirigan, also known as the Darkling, leads Ravka's Second Army and has spent his life searching for a Grisha who can summon light, the only person who can destroy the Shadow Fold. The Shadow Fold is a region of darkness that was created hundreds of years ago and now divides Ravka in two, with the west seeking independence.
Alina Starkov discovers she is a Grisha with the power to summon light, and her identity as a Sun Summoner becomes known. In the trading city of Ketterdam, Kaz Brekker, leader of the Crows gang, is hired to kidnap her, while Fjerdan witch hunters are sent to kill her, and the people of Ravka venerate her as a Saint. Alina must navigate her newfound power and decide who she can trust as she seeks to destroy the Shadow Fold and save Ravka.
