In his first interview discussing the traumatic heart attack he experienced in 2010, Shakin' Stevens (real name Michael Barratt) spoke with Lorraine about how it almost ended his life but how he has since recovered and is ready to make a comeback to the music scene. The heart attack was caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM), a thickening of the heart muscle that can lead to irregular heartbeat, damage to the heart muscle, or even cardiac arrest if left untreated.

While Shaky attributed stress as a factor, doctors indicated that genetics played a bigger role, as his brother had died from a similar condition in 2006. As part of his recovery, Shaky has made significant lifestyle changes including giving up alcohol. He is now in good health and will be embarking on a tour next year to promote his 12th album, Echoes of our Times, which was released earlier this month.
