At the tender age of 14, Teru Momijiyama, a young girl from Japan, holds the esteemed position of being Japan's hero representative. However, her hero identity is shrouded in the peculiar name of "Shy," a reflection of her extreme shyness. Teru's journey as a hero begins when she is chosen to serve her country, a responsibility that calls for her to make a public appearance at an amusement park and deliver a speech.
Unfortunately, her paralyzing shyness takes center stage, and her speech bores the audience to the point of embarrassment, leading her to hastily exit the stage. Teru's misfortunes escalate when she attempts to rescue riders from a malfunctioning roller coaster, resulting in severe injuries to a young girl named Iko Koishikawa.
The public pins the blame on Teru for her perceived failure to save Iko. This traumatic incident spirals Teru into a deep depression, causing her to lose confidence in her abilities and withdraw from her responsibilities as a hero. She goes into isolation for an entire month, battling her own self-doubt.
