Sifu

Sifu is a video game created by the French studio Sloclap. In the game, you control a martial arts master's child who seeks revenge for their father's death. What makes Sifu unique is that when your character dies, they come back to life but age, gaining more powerful moves but losing health.

If your character gets too old and dies, you have to start the level over. The game was released on February 8, 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. It came to the Nintendo Switch on November 8, 2022, and to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on March 28, 2023. Sifu received positive reviews for its combat, environments, and story and quickly sold over 1 million copies within one month of release.

Sifu Gameplay

In "Sifu," the gameplay is all about action and fighting, where you control a character from a third-person view. It's like a martial arts game, and it's inspired by Bak Mei kung fu. You have more than 150 different moves to use in the game.

You can do basic attacks and chain them together, and some combinations let you do special things like knocking down or stunning enemies. Your character and the enemies have a special gauge, and when it's full, their defenses break, and you can do finishing moves on them.

You can also block, but that fills your gauge, or you can dodge and parry enemy attacks. If you parry well, you can stun the enemy or throw them in a certain direction. You can also use the environment and objects around you to fight or come up with new strategies.

When your character dies in the game, they magically come back to life where they died but get older. As they age, they become stronger but have less health. Eventually, they get so old that they can't come back, and the game ends. You can find shrines to heal and learn new skills and visit a kung fu school to practice between levels.

When your character dies, you lose some abilities, but you can permanently unlock upgrades that stay with you in each new game. As you play more, you can access a "detective board" that keeps track of information from different playthroughs and might open up secret areas and shortcuts. Sometimes, you even get to choose what to say in dialogue, which can help you avoid fights depending on your words.

Sifu Plot

The plot of Sifu follows a martial arts student named Yang, who, along with four other fighters, attacks their former martial arts school, leading to their master's death. However, the master's child, the game's main character, survives thanks to a special talisman that revives them but ages them with each death.

After eight years of training and gathering information, the child grows into a skilled martial artist and seeks revenge against Yang and the others. The story unfolds as the protagonist hunts down and defeats each of Yang's former allies, each with unique powers.

In the end, when confronting Yang, the child learns about the master's actions and the importance of martial arts morality. The game offers two possible endings: one where the child is stuck in an endless loop if they kill their enemies and another where they achieve enlightenment by sparing them and eventually become a martial arts teacher.
