Following the announcement in June 2020 and subsequent updates in October 2021, Finn's short film was adapted into a full-length feature film. Principal photography took place in New Jersey from October to November 2021. After receiving positive feedback from test screenings, the film's distributor, Paramount Pictures, decided to release it in theaters instead of on the streaming platform Paramount+.

Smile Ending Explained

In "Smile," Joel manages to track down Rose by tracing her phone but unfortunately arrives just in time to witness the monster finally gaining control over her. When Joel enters the room, he finds Rose preparing to light a match with an eerie smile on her face, covered in petrol. Tragically, Rose meets her demise in the film, and to make matters worse, it seems that the curse may continue, with Joel possibly being the next victim.

The shocking conclusion of "Smile" not only features terrifying grins but also delivers a compelling narrative. What sets Rose apart from other characters in horror films is that the reason she is being pursued by the entity is linked to her challenging and traumatic past. In "Smile," the titular monster seems to be aware of Rose and her sister Holly's (played by Gillian Zinser) history of losing their mother to suicide and carrying the emotional burden of that loss.

While the film features spooky creatures and horrifying monsters like many other horror films, what sets it apart is its focus on character development. Rose and Holly are portrayed as complex and relatable characters, whose past traumas have shaped them into who they are. This makes the presence of the Smile monster all the more surprising and terrifying, as it preys on their already vulnerable state caused by their previous experiences.

Smile Plot

"Smile," the psychological thriller movie, takes audiences on a gripping and terrifying journey as Dr. Rose Cotter, a therapist, tries to unravel the mystery of a curse that appears to be haunting her. Rose's once-stable world begins to unravel when she meets Laura Weaver, a graduate student who claims to be tormented by a malevolent smiling spirit. As Rose delves into the curse, she uncovers a pattern of suicides linked to its dark presence.

In her quest to solve the puzzle, Rose realizes that confronting her own tragic history is the key to breaking free from the curse's grip. However, as she digs deeper into the mystery, the true nature of the entity and its relentless pursuit of her become increasingly horrifying. The movie builds towards a startling and terrifying conclusion, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats, gripped by the suspenseful and chilling tale of "Smile."

Smile Review

The horror genre is currently in an exciting phase, with films striving to create fear-inducing experiences that go beyond jump scares and camera tricks. While the previously released "Barbarian" was exceptional in this regard, "Smile" comes close to matching its intensity. Watch it for Finn. The brand-new horror movie "Smile" delivers a suspenseful tale accompanied by top-notch sound and visual effects. It offers a traditional horror experience that combines thrilling entertainment with a gripping story.

Despite being somewhat derivative, Sosie Bacon delivers an admirably dedicated performance, and the direction is skillful, making "Smile" a spooky and frightening journey. Director Parker Finn is certainly one to watch.
