Stellaris Gameplay

Stellaris is a futuristic grand strategy game where players control an interstellar civilization that is exploring, colonizing, and managing their corner of the galaxy. They encounter other civilizations, which can be interacted with through diplomacy, trade, or warfare. The game is centered around scripted and emergent events that can alter the balance of power and affect the player's strategy. The game is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

At the start of the game, players create a species with a mixture of positive and negative characteristics and customize their empire's ethics, civics, and origin. They can also create secondary playable races such as robots or worker races. Ethics and civics have normal and fanatic versions that represent the empire's alignment, with fanatic versions giving greater bonuses but having more restrictions. Megacorporations have unique civics and aren't restricted ethics-wise like hive minds.

Players start with a single inhabited planet, several mining and/or research stations, a construction ship, a science ship, three small warships, and a starbase. The economy is based on five resources, with technologies and traditions providing better features for the player as the game progresses. Edicts are used to boost and upgrade empires, and influence can be obtained by supporting factions within the player's empire or participating in diplomacy with other empires. Mid-game crises can occur, such as a crusade by a marauder empire, while late-game crises have galaxy-wide implications, such as an awakening of dormant sentient AI or an invasion by extra-dimensional or extra-galactic forces. The Nemesis DLC allows players to become the crisis with the goal of destroying the galaxy.
