Super Mario RPG
Super Mario RPG is a video game released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It's the final Mario game for the SNES. The game follows Mario and his friends as they try to stop the Smithy Gang, who have disrupted their world and scattered the seven-star pieces of Star Road. It's the first RPG in the Mario series, taking inspiration from Square's RPG games like Final Fantasy. The game features turn-based combat with up to three characters and introduces an isometric 3D environment for exploration and platforming, a first for the Mario franchise.
The game received high praise for its humor and 3D graphics. It served as the foundation for Nintendo's other RPG series, Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, which carry forward some gameplay elements. Super Mario RPG was made available on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008, expanding to Europe and Australia, and later on the Wii U's Virtual Console in 2015. It was also included in the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017. A remake for the Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release on November 17, 2023.

Super Mario RPG Gameplay
In Super Mario RPG, you'll notice similarities to other games made by Square, especially the Final Fantasy series. However, the story and gameplay are mainly based on the Super Mario Bros. platform games. The game has two main parts: exploring and turn-based battles. When you're not fighting monsters, the game feels like a 3D platformer, with Mario doing things like hitting question blocks from below. Unlike some RPGs, you can see enemies in the field, so you only fight when Mario touches one. This means you can avoid fights you don't want to be in.
At first, you'll play with just Mario, but your group will grow to five characters. In battles, Mario and two others fight, and you can switch them in and out as you explore. Each character has their own special moves. For example, Princess Toadstool can heal, while Geno and Bowser can do powerful attacks. Battles follow a turn-based system, but you can add extra power with well-timed button presses. At the start of each turn, you choose to attack, defend, run, use items, or do magic from the menu. This action command, where you time your button presses, became a common feature in later Mario RPGs.
Super Mario RPG Plot
One day, Mario goes to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Bowser's castle. During their fight, a huge living sword named Exor falls from the sky, breaking the Star Road and wrecking Bowser's castle. This sends Mario, Princess Toadstool, and Bowser flying in different directions, and scatters seven star pieces.
Mario meets Toad, who tells him he needs to save Toadstool. He tries to return to Bowser's castle, but Exor destroys the bridge. Mario goes to the Mushroom Kingdom and meets a "tadpole" named Mallow. They retrieve a frog coin taken by a thief named Croco. When they return, they find the Smithy Gang, led by the evil robotic blacksmith king Smithy, has taken over. Mario and Mallow defeat the gang's boss, Mack, and find a Star Piece. Mallow learns he's not really a tadpole and decides to join Mario in finding the seven Star Pieces and his real parents.
They meet a star spirit named Geno who has taken control of a wooden doll. They battle Bowyer, who is causing trouble in Rose Town. They get another Star Piece. Geno tells Mario about the shattered Star Road and his mission to fix it and defeat Smithy. Bowser asks for Mario's help to reclaim his castle, and they team up. They rescue Princess Toadstool from a fake wedding with Booster. She decides to join the party while her grandmother takes her place in disguise.
They gather five more Star Pieces and head to Nimbus Land. They learn Valentina is holding the rulers captive. They defeat Valentina and Dodo, freeing Mallow's parents, the king and queen. They see a star fall into a nearby volcano.
They go to Barrel Volcano and get the sixth Star Piece. They find out the final piece is with Smithy in Bowser's castle. They fight through enemies, enter the castle, and discover Exor is a gateway to Smithy's factory. They defeat Smithy, stopping his army, and Exor disappears. The Star Pieces fix the Star Road, Geno goes back, Bowser rebuilds his castle, Mallow becomes prince again, and Mario and Princess Toadstool celebrate their victory.
