Mario and Mallow venture into the castle, defeat gang boss Mack, and recover a Star Piece. Along the way, they meet Geno, a star spirit residing in a wooden doll, who joins their quest to repair the Star Road and thwart Smithy's plans.
Their journey is filled with encounters with various characters like Booster, Princess Toadstool's grandmother, and others. As they gather Star Pieces, they confront Smithy in Bowser's castle, uncover Exor as a gateway to Smithy's factory, and defeat the malevolent blacksmith, halting the production of his army.
With the Star Pieces, they restore the Star Road, granting people's wishes again. Geno returns to the Star Road, Bowser rebuilds his castle with a reformed army, Mallow becomes the prince of Nimbus Land, and Mario and Princess Toadstool celebrate their victory in the Mushroom Kingdom.
