Super Mario RPG Gameplay

Super Mario RPG mixes elements from games like Final Fantasy with the fun of Super Mario Bros. It's split between exploring and turn-based battles, just like many RPGs. When you're not fighting monsters, the game feels a lot like a 3D Mario game, letting you do things like hitting question blocks. You can see enemies in the world, so you only fight if you touch them, which helps skip unnecessary battles.

You start with Mario and eventually team up with five characters, picking three for battles. Each character has special skills - like Princess Toadstool can heal, while Geno and Bowser deal big damage. Battles work like a classic turn-based system, but you can do extra moves by pressing buttons at the right time. This trick became a big part of later Mario RPGs.

Super Mario RPG Plot

One day, Mario heads to Bowser's castle to save Princess Toadstool, but a huge sword named Exor smashes the Star Road and the castle, flinging Mario, the Princess, and Bowser apart while scattering seven star pieces. Mario meets Toad, who tells him to save Toadstool. When Mario tries to return to the castle, Exor wrecks the bridge.

Along the way, he meets Mallow, not a tadpole but a lost prince, and Geno, a star spirit in a doll. They join forces to collect star pieces and stop the evil Smithy Gang. Bowser even ends up joining the team. They rescue Toadstool from a funny wedding, find out Mallow's true identity, free Nimbus Land, and gather all the star pieces except one. They learn that Smithy has it in Bowser's castle. They fight their way in, defeat Smithy, fix the Star Road, and everyone goes back to their homes happily after celebrating their victory.
