Tate Makgoe, a 59-year-old South African politician, died in a car accident on March 5, 2023. The accident also claimed the life of his bodyguard, Warrant Officer Vuyo Mdi, while his driver, Pule Nkopane, survived and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Tate Makgoe was returning from a meeting in Gauteng and was en route to attend a morning church service in Heidedal, Bloemfontein. The Free State Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, stated that Tate Makgoe insisted on driving back in the early hours to attend the church service. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.

What Did Tate Makgoe Die From?

He received his primary education in Tumahole and completed his high school education in Sebokeng. Makgoe pursued chemical engineering at the Technikon Vaal Triangle and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of South Africa. He later earned a BCom Honours degree from the University of the Free State and a master's degree in business leadership from UNISA. In September 2018, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Business Administration from the Vaal University of Technology. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy program in Education at the University of the Free State.

In 1984, Makgoe joined the military wing of the African National Congress, Umkhonto we Sizwe, and left South Africa. He was imprisoned at the Sun City Prison from 1986 to 1991 for his involvement in anti-apartheid activities. After the African National Congress was unbanned, Makgoe served on the party's Northern Free State Regional Executive Committee in 1991. He was the party's provincial campaign manager in the Free State during the 1994 general elections. Between 1998 and 2001, Makgoe served as the ANC's provincial treasurer and was a member of the Provincial Executive Committee.
