Teardown, a sandbox game released in 2022 by Tuxedo Labs, follows the story of a struggling demolition company owner entangled in a mix of police investigations and dubious assignments. The game features destructible voxel levels, where players must collect or destroy objects tied to security alarms. With upgradable tools and vehicles, players have unlimited preparation time to create a path through the level.

Once the security alarm triggers, a countdown begins, and players must complete objectives and reach a getaway vehicle within sixty seconds. Developed using a proprietary engine by Dennis Gustafsson, the game gained popularity through Gustafsson's development updates on Twitter. Teardown's early access phase, beginning in October 2020, received positive reactions, leading to a full release in April 2022.

Despite mixed opinions on campaign progression and story, the game received praise for its physics, interactivity, graphics, art style, and music. Support for mods contributed to its longevity, and by August 2022, Teardown had sold 1.1 million copies, prompting Tuxedo Labs' acquisition by Saber Interactive. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S ports, published by Saber Interactive, are set to release in 2023.

Teardown Gameplay

Teardown is a sandbox game with puzzle elements where players experience the action from a first-person perspective. The game consists of nine levels, entirely made up of destructible voxels, with some materials requiring stronger tools for destruction. Starting with a sledgehammer, fire extinguisher, and spray can, players can freely navigate and mark points of interest.

Additional tools like a blowtorch, shotgun, bombs, and a rocket launcher are unlocked during the campaign, with the option to upgrade tools using cash earned in levels. Vehicles such as trucks, cranes, and boats, along with explosives like propane tanks, aid in traversal and destruction.

Each mission has objectives, some required and some optional, often involving stealing or destroying specific objects tied to a security alarm. A countdown begins once triggered, giving players sixty seconds to complete tasks and reach a getaway vehicle. Fail, and a security helicopter intervenes. Players can plan with unlimited setup time, view overviews, and replay routes. Accessibility options allow players to adjust the difficulty.

Sandbox mode provides tools without objectives, while Creative mode lets players design levels. Three challenge modes add variety. Teardown supports modding, enabling the creation of custom levels and structures using MagicaVoxel, with over 6,000 mods available on the Steam Workshop by September 2023. Modding competitions are held biannually, contributing to the game's lasting appeal.

Teardown Plot

Teardown's story unfolds through emails received by the player character in the fictional Löckelle Municipality. The player controls the owner of Löckelle Teardown Services, facing financial struggles. Accepting a job from Gordon Woo to demolish a building, the owner unknowingly violates cultural heritage protection laws. To avoid investigation, the owner assists investigator Parisa Terdiman in probing Lawrence Lee Junior and Lee Chemicals.

The narrative weaves through destructive tasks orchestrated by Lee and Woo against each other. Terdiman uncovers that BlueTide, an energy drink company led by Mr Amanatides, is the mystery client. The owner is drawn into retrieving information for Amanatides, creating a complex web of corporate intrigue. Tracy, the owner's mother, remains unaware as she purchases a new company vehicle.

The story takes a darker turn as Amanatides seeks revenge, culminating in the creation of a destructive machine, the Truxterminator. Amanatides unleashes chaos on Cullington, leading to a tense finale where the owner must guide the Truxterminator to safety, saving the town and Tracy from an unwitting threat.
