Formed by Ed Isola, the band's music has been described as a "folk orchestra," combining elements of indie folk, folk rock, folk-pop, Americana, and indie rock.
Known for their energetic live performances and charismatic personalities, The 502s have created a musical identity often compared to artists like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, The Avett Brothers, and Old Crow Medicine Show. The band's longest-standing consistent lineup includes Ed Isola, Matthew Tonner (keyboards, guitars), Joe Capati (saxophone), Sean Froehlich (drums & percussion), and Nicholas Melashenko (bass guitar).
