The Big Bang Theory is an American television sitcom that aired on CBS from September 24, 2007, to May 16, 2019. Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, who also served as executive producers, along with Steven Molaro, the show consisted of 12 seasons and 279 episodes.
The series initially focused on five main characters living in Pasadena, California: Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, physicists at Caltech who shared an apartment; Penny, their neighbor, and aspiring actress; and their socially awkward friends and coworkers, Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali. As the show progressed, supporting characters like Amy Farrah Fowler, Bernadette Rostenkowski, and Stuart Bloom were promoted to starring roles.
The Big Bang Theory was filmed in front of a live audience and produced by Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television. While it received mixed reviews in its first season, it gained a more favorable reception in subsequent seasons. The show consistently ranked within the top ten in ratings and reached the number one spot in its eleventh season.
It received numerous award nominations, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, and won seven Emmy Awards out of 46 nominations. Jim Parsons, who portrayed Sheldon Cooper, won four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and the show also earned a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Comedy Series in 2011. In 2017, a prequel series called "Young Sheldon," based on the character Sheldon Cooper, was created and aired on CBS.
