The Contractor Ending Explained
James and Mike find themselves in a challenging situation as they are pursued by an increasing number of police officers. Complicating matters, Mike has been shot in the leg. Despite the odds, they manage to escape and find safety. In a selfless act, James donates blood to help Mike survive. They come up with a plan: Mike will head to Berlin with the secured laptop while James rests and follows the next day.
Upon arriving in Berlin, James discovers an empty hotel room with no sign of Mike, only finding instructions about his own extraction. Worried, James contacts Rusty and explains the situation, also inquiring about Mike's whereabouts. Rusty informs James that Mike never arrived with the intel but assures him of an immediate extraction.
However, when James goes to the designated meeting point, he is ambushed by a group attempting to kill him. Miraculously, James survives the attack and interrogates one of the assailants, who reveals that Rusty had sent them to eliminate James. It becomes clear that there is no way for James to escape, and he must remain hidden in Germany.
The Contractor Plot
SFC James Harper, a decorated Green Beret, is discharged from the army due to illegal steroid use for his knee injury. He contacts his friend Mike, who works for Rusty Jennings' private military company. Harper joins Rusty's team for an operation in Germany. Rusty gives Harper money to help his family. During the mission, they surveil a scientist named Salim, suspected of working for Al-Qaeda.
They raid Salim's lab, retrieve data, and Harper is ordered to kill Salim. They face the police and Harper saves a wounded Mike, hiding in a storm drain. Mike asks Harper to look after his family and deliver the data to Rusty. Harper gives Mike a blood transfusion and rests while Mike continues alone. Harper later reaches the hotel but finds no sign of Mike or Rusty.
He contacts Rusty and senses danger. A hit team attacks, and Harper kills them, learning they are former Marines working for Rusty. Harper coerces Salim's wife for his computer files and heads to a safe house. He is tranquilized and wakes up to Virgil explaining his knee infection. Harper plays a video revealing Salim's vaccine intentions. Another fire team attacks, killing Virgil, but Harper escapes.
Back in the US, Harper finds Mike, who reveals Rusty's lies. Rusty cared for Harper's family, but Mike urges Harper to disappear. They plan revenge on Rusty. Harper infiltrates Rusty's compound, with Mike distracting the guards. Harper terminates Rusty but not before Rusty mortally wounds Mike. Finally, Harper reunites with his family.
