The Last of Us Episode 8 Ending Explained

Episode eight comes to a terrifying conclusion after another. As soon as Joel gets to Silver Lake, he discovers his horse dead in a cold storage space beside three headless human corpses that have been dressed, washed, and put on hooks. This horrifies Joel. Before she obtains a meat cleaver, David appears to be about to sexually abuse her back in the flaming steakhouse. As she slashes him to death, she almost goes feral.

Yet despite the grimness and bloodshed of the day, there are glimmerings of optimism. In Joel's opinion, failing to save his daughter when the disease broke out is "The Last of Us'" original sin. He arrives on this day to find Ellie already saved, but at least he gets to offer her the comforting hug he never gave Sarah. This is a form of bravery in and of itself. Joel clings to a crying, traumatized Ellie closely. It's alright, little child, he says. I've got you.

The Last of Us Episode 8 Review

Although the emotional beats don't exactly hit as strongly as they do there, this episode is generally quite close to the game. For instance, the Joel and Ellie reunion in the game is so powerful because it occurs inside the kitchen, and Joel shows up just as Ellie is about to stab David with her knife. Joel pulls her off, as she is furious and unable to control her emotions. Ellie's defenses then start to fray.

It doesn't quite work the same way because of the series' minor adjustment, where Ellie's ability to control herself reveals far more power and less weakness. Although the difference is small, it serves as an illustration of how this scenario feels more dissonant in contrast. Despite these criticisms, the episode is still enjoyable, and learning more about the cult's operations and all of its members is a great touch.

The Last Of Us episode 8 Recap

The Last of Us' eighth episode opens with the introduction of a religious cult congregating in a frozen, deserted town. David welcomes them and tells a tearful girl that they will have to wait until spring to bury her father since the ground is too hard now. James challenges their plan of action and expresses anxiety over their limited finances when David approaches him outside after the sermon. Despite the fact that everyone has had a challenging six months, the two have decided on their course of action for the time being. Ellie makes the decision to go hunting with a gun in the meantime. She does succeed in killing a deer, but it runs away after being struck.David, James, and a trickle of blood all led to the dead body of the animal. Ellie tracks down the couple and threatens to shoot them. She succeeds in negotiating a bargain in which she demands medication for Joel in exchange for half the deer.

David and Ellie are left alone while James leaves to get the medication. When they move into a refuge, she raises a revolver to his face. Ellie's defenses are gradually breached by David, who emphasizes his former status as a teacher and the fact that he was never religious. In addition, the young child who started screaming earlier in the episode was a direct result of a four-man hunting team entering the local town. Only three of them came back, but the father of that young girl was the one who didn't. A wild traveler who was with a young girl killed him. As James moves back and outnumbers her, Ellie's amazement briefly gives way to instinct. James is told to hand the medicine over, and David offers to stand guard. Ellie declines and heads back to see Joel as soon as she can.

David chooses to prosecute Joel and Ellie, and he informs the others that evening of their strategy. But he does not want Ellie dead. As David, James, and a few other guards arrive to discover the two in their frozen town, Ellie finds herself in over her head. Joel is safe in the garage as Ellie leads the group of people out. Ellie is knocked off of her horse and lands forcefully on the ground, so she doesn't travel very far. David is given a false sense of security by Ellie, who also bites him while breaking his finger. Ellie is ultimately caught and hauled out, suffering only a broken nose as a result. The moment she mentions that she is infected while lying down on a table, she manages to free herself and dash through the kitchen and into the restaurant, killing James in the process. Ellie grabs a kitchen knife and runs under the bar as the kitchen catches fire. She waits patiently and succeeds in stabbing David in the side. However, David knocks her to the ground, but Ellie grabs a knife and stabs him repeatedly. Joel shows up and gives her some words of support before leaving with her as she falls outside.
