Players assume the role of Link, tasked with assisting Princess Zelda in her mission to prevent Ganondorf from devastating Hyrule. The concept for Tears of the Kingdom originated when the ideas for downloadable content (DLC) for Breath of the Wild surpassed the scope originally envisioned.

The development of the game was spearheaded by Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) division, with Hidemaro Fujibayashi returning as the director and Eiji Aonuma reprising his role as the producer.

A teaser for the game was unveiled at E3 2019, followed by a comprehensive reveal at E3 2021. Initially slated for a 2022 release, Tears of the Kingdom was subsequently postponed and launched in May 2023. It received widespread acclaim for its enhancements, expanded open world, and features that promote exploration and experimentation. Within its first three days of release, the game surpassed 10 million copies sold."

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay

Tears of the Kingdom maintains the immersive open-world action-adventure gameplay that characterized its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017). As the heroic protagonist, Link, players embark on a grand expedition through the expansive lands of Hyrule, which now include two new regions: the Sky Islands and the Depths.

Within these realms, adventurers can discover a plethora of weapons, resources, and engage in fulfilling quests. Link's means of traversal encompass traditional methods like walking, climbing, horseback riding, and utilizing paragliders. Introducing an array of innovative mechanics, Tears of the Kingdom showcases the inclusion of Zonai devices.

These extraordinary tools grant players versatile options for combat, propulsion, exploration, and more. Replacing the runes from the previous game, five new powers emerge: Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall, and Autobuild. Ultrahand empowers players to manipulate and transport various objects, even combining them to construct unique vehicles and structures in tandem with Zonai devices.

Fuse enables Link to merge materials, equipment, or specific objects within the game world, enhancing the attributes and durability of shields and weapons. For instance, attaching an explosive item to an arrow results in an explosive impact upon firing. Autobuild provides the ability to instantaneously recreate devices crafted with Ultrahand, automatically utilizing nearby objects and devices for construction.

If necessary components are absent, Autobuild can produce temporary replacements at the expense of zonaite, a valuable resource. Ascend grants the player the ability to ascend through solid surfaces, opening new avenues of exploration. Lastly, Recall allows for a "rewind" effect on objects, reversing their movement to a previous state.
