The Mother Ending Explained
During her mission to rescue Zoe, The Mother confronts Álvarez and reveals that he is not Zoe's father, ultimately killing him. However, her ally, FBI Agent William Cruise (played by Omari Hardwick), is shot and killed by Lovell, creating a tense situation. Despite this setback, The Mother and Zoe manage to escape and find refuge in a remote cabin located in the Alaskan wilderness, where The Mother trains her daughter in survival skills.
Trouble arises when Zoe is bitten by a wolf puppy and seeks medical attention at a nearby health clinic. Unbeknownst to her, this unwittingly provides Lovell with a means to track their whereabouts. Recognizing the danger, The Mother leaves Zoe under the care of her trusted friend Jons (portrayed by Paul Raci) and prepares to confront Lovell at the cabin. Meanwhile, Zoe, driven by curiosity, stumbles upon a collection of childhood photos and a heartfelt message from her mother vowing to protect her at any cost.
Motivated by her newfound knowledge, Zoe decides to return to the cabin to assist her mother in the face of the impending threat. However, her choice proves unwise as Lovell arrives with a group of allies, many of whom fall victim to The Mother's strategically placed land mines. Zoe manages to reach her mother's side, but Lovell now holds them at gunpoint. The Mother pleads with Zoe to flee while she confronts Lovell alone.
As the climactic battle unfolds, a shocking revelation emerges—Lovell is Zoe's father. Amidst the chaos, Zoe intervenes, inadvertently injuring both of her parents with a rifle shot. Concerned for her mother's well-being, Zoe rushes to her side, only for Lovell to seize her and attempt to escape in his truck. Fortunately, The Mother awakens just in time and delivers a precise headshot, ending Lovell's life.
With her daughter safe and her adversaries vanquished, The Mother brings Zoe back to her adoptive parents. In a heartfelt moment, they express their love for each other before The Mother returns to a life free from hiding. The film concludes with a poignant scene showing her residing in an apartment near Zoe, symbolized by a friendship bracelet engraved with the word 'Mom,' representing the deep bond they share.

The Mother Plot
An unnamed U.S. military operative, referred to as "the Mother," orchestrates an illicit weapons deal involving ex-SAS marine Adrian Lovell and arms dealer Hector Álvarez. Caught in a complicated romantic entanglement with both men, she soon discovers their involvement in child trafficking. Seeking redemption, the Mother decides to become an informant for the FBI.
During interrogation at a secure location, FBI Special Agent William Cruise and the Mother come under attack by Lovell, resulting in Cruise being wounded and the other agents being killed. Quick thinking, the Mother saves Cruise's life by setting off a time-delayed bomb that incapacitates Lovell. Despite being stabbed in the process, she survives and later gives birth prematurely in a hospital.
SAIC Eleanor Williams informs the Mother that Lovell's body has gone missing, posing a threat to her newborn daughter's safety. Realizing that her child will never be safe with her, she reluctantly relinquishes her parental rights. The Mother visits Cruise and sets three conditions: her daughter should lead a normal life, she should receive a photo on every birthday, and Cruise should contact her if the child's safety is compromised. With that, the Mother retreats to a secluded cabin in Alaska for the next twelve years until Cruise reaches out to her in Ohio.
A cruise reveals that the ATF has discovered a photo of the Mother's daughter, Zoe, indicating that their cover might be blown. While surveilling Zoe in a park, Hector's men abduct her. The Mother manages to eliminate several assailants before escaping with Cruise. While Cruise believes Zoe's kidnapping is for ransom, the Mother realizes it's a ploy to draw her out of hiding.
Their pursuit leads them to Havana, Cuba, where they capture Tarantula, Hector's lieutenant, who discloses Zoe's location at Hector's residence known as "the Plantation." In a daring operation, they rescue Zoe and the Mother exacts revenge by killing Hector.
While accompanying Zoe back home, the Mother's gaze reveals that she is Zoe's biological mother. Understanding that Zoe's safety lies in staying away, the Mother decides to let Cruise return her to the foster parents. However, Lovell intercepts them, resulting in a confrontation where the Mother escapes with Zoe but not before Lovell kills Cruise.
Recognizing the danger, the Mother takes Zoe to the remote cabin. Reluctantly, she imparts survival training to Zoe, forging a bond between them. Eventually, upon discovering Adrian's impending arrival, the Mother decides to leave Zoe in the care of Jons, a former army colleague. Feeling abandoned once again, Zoe receives guidance from Jons, who encourages her to judge the Mother by her actions rather than her words. After finding a letter from the Mother explaining her sacrifices for Zoe's well-being, Zoe resolves to return to the cabin and aid her in fending off the attackers.
In the final confrontation, the Mother eliminates all of Lovell's men before facing him directly. Although she is momentarily incapacitated, Lovell seizes Zoe and attempts to flee. In a remarkable display of marksmanship, the Mother fatally shoots Lovell, securing their freedom. With her former allies gone, the Mother reunites Zoe with her foster family, finally out of harm's way. Able to observe Zoe from a distance without fear, the Mother embraces her newfound freedom.
