"Ryûhei Kitamura's gritty grindhouse horror film, "The Price We Pay," kicks off with a provocative scene featuring a sex worker adorned in a striking red dress, unceremoniously tossed out of a car by her client in a desolate location. Seizing the opportunity, she cleverly snatches the man's wallet before he speeds away, seeking refuge in a dingy rest stop restroom to examine her ill-gotten gains. However, her solitude is short-lived as an unexpected trucker enters the scene. Suspense builds as a sweeping aerial shot circles around, capturing her cautious movements as she cautiously emerges from her stall, scanning for any signs of danger. Suddenly, a vibrant burst of orange light pierces the room, and she finds herself succumbing to the effects of a tranquilizer dart, landing softly on her chest."
The Price We Pay Plot
After a sex worker completes a transaction, she finds herself stranded at a desolate gas station far from civilization. As she rummages through the wallet she stole from her client, an unknown assailant shoots her with a tranquilizer dart and abducts her. Meanwhile, Grace is in the midst of a negotiation with a pawn shop owner over unpaid debts when the establishment is suddenly targeted by Alex, Cody, and Alex's brother Shane. Chaos erupts as the owner shoots Shane in the leg, resulting in a fatal exchange of gunfire. The getaway driver panics and flees the scene. Forced to act, Grace becomes entangled with the three robbers and is coerced into becoming their getaway driver.
However, their escape plans are thwarted when Grace's car breaks down. In a desperate attempt to find shelter, Cody and Grace convince a young farmhand named Danny that they are on their way to visit relatives and request temporary refuge in his farmhouse until Cody's supposed brother arrives. Inside the farmhouse, suspicions arise when Alex begins investigating Danny's activities. His curiosity leads him to discover a hidden dungeon, just as Danny's doctor grandfather and the imposing Jodi return home. Unbeknownst to Alex, the kidnapped sex worker awakens in the basement and attempts to flee, triggering a tense confrontation that ends with Alex shooting her.
In a surprising turn of events, Jodi captures Alex, and the doctor immobilizes Cody and Grace using tranquilizer darts. As the captives face a grim fate, it is revealed that the doctor has a personal vendetta against men like them, fueled by the suffering his daughter endured. The doctor carries out a twisted plan, removing Shane's heart and explaining the value of Alex's eyes on the black market. In a harrowing turn, he mutilates Alex by cutting out his eyes. Elsewhere, Grace pleads with Danny for help, but he callously connects an IV bag to her arm, suggesting her impending demise.
Miraculously, Cody regains consciousness in the same room and manages to disrupt Grace's IV line, offering a glimmer of hope. Jodi escorts Cody to the operating room, where Alex's eyes have already been harvested. Realizing his fate, Alex attempts to fight back, but Jodi swiftly dispatches him by slitting his throat. In a desperate bid for survival, Grace seizes the opportunity when the doctor is preoccupied with Cody's operation. With the help of Danny, she breaks free from her restraints and launches a fierce attack on the doctor, causing a fatal chain of events. Using a canister of compressed gas, Grace propels the doctor's head into a wall, shattering it into fragments.
Jodi returns, but Danny locks her out of the room. Grace and Danny collaborate to suture Cody's wounds, strategizing their escape. With Cody's guidance, Grace administers an adrenaline injection, providing them with a vital advantage. Together, they flee through a hidden passageway within the walls as Jodi reappears, swiftly dispatching Cody before pursuing the escapees.In their desperate bid for freedom, Grace and Danny climb a ladder into the doctor's truck. Contemplating their uncertain future, Danny asks, "Where do we go from here?" Grace responds with uncertainty, expressing her willingness to find out. With determination, the two survivors drive away from the farmhouse, leaving their haunting ordeal behind as they venture into the unknown.
