The band's name is derived from an eponymous poem by English poet laureate Ted Hughes.
Formed during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, they initially collaborated to finish unfinished songs from Radiohead's vault. The official announcement of The Smile was made on May 22, 2021, just before their debut performance at the Glastonbury Festival's livestream. Their debut single "You Will Never Work in Television Again" was released on January 5, 2022, followed by "The Smoke" on January 27.
