The Swan

The Swan is an American television show that debuted on Fox in 2004 and featured ladies who were judged to be unattractive being given "excessive makeovers" that included various types of plastic surgery. The series title is a reference to the fairy tale The Ugly Duckling, wherein a dull bird grows up to become a swan. The show has been panned by critics for encouraging women to value themselves based on their appearance and portrayed plastic surgery as a necessity. Kelly Alemi

Kelly Alemi, a contestant from Season 1, recently gave an interview in which she was asked about critics who said the show made women look "hideous." Everyone had an opinion, she said, and she was shocked when she first saw herself. They had to retake the photo when they first saw themselves in the mirror because she said, "That kinda doesn't look like me." They warned her not to react the same way she did the first time, but she liked my new look at the end of the show.

Cindy Ingle

Runner-up in the first season Cindy Ingle was also asked if she still felt "Chicka-bam" about her transition for the episode. She admitted she still feels "chick-a-bam" and that she had to go under the knife again after the ordeal. Cindy was playing ball when she was hit in the face by a fly ball. Reconstructive surgery was required for her. She had a brow lift, cheekbone lift, facelift, buckle fat removal, nose and boob job, tummy tuck, and thigh lip during the show. After the makeover, Ingle said that she was "ecstatic." Her kids didn't recognize me until I started talking, but they were so happy. She lived some time overseas, Italy for a while and all that confidence was through 'The Swan', and having that confidence, she is happy with the way she is.

Lorrie Arias

Arias, on the other hand, now has lupus, depression, bipolar disorder, and body dysmorphic disorder. She also put on the weight she had lost on the tv earlier on. During an interview, Arias admitted she was 155 on 'The Swan,' and now at 248.  And in a bad mood. Despite everything that has happened to her, Arias has stated that she would do it all over again. The former Swan, on the other hand, admitted that it's more about trying to deal with her fears and anxieties than anything else. She said she assumed an abdominoplasty would boost my self-esteem to new heights. But it didn't.

The Swan Show

Each contestant was paired with a team of experts, including a trainer, counselor, instructor, plastic surgeons, and a dentist, who colluded to create a total transformation plan. So over course of a few three months, the participants' work ethic, development, and accomplishment were assessed. Each week, two women were showcased, with one going home at the end of the episode and the other being chosen to start competing in the Swan pageant at the end of the season for the chance to be crowned The Swan. The Swan Controversies

The Swan was "hurtful and repellent even by reality's continuously plunging standards," according to USA Today's Robert Bianco. In her book Reality Bites Back, journalist Jennifer Pozner calls The Swan "the most sadism reality series of the decade." "The Swan's clear message is that once these ladies have been surgical intervention 'corrected' to resemble mainline celebrity beauty as accurately as possible, their problems would be solved," wrote journalist Chris Hedges in his 2009 book Empire of Illusion. Susan J. Douglas, a feminist scholar, slammed the show in her book The Rise of Enlightened Sexism for perpetuating a negative female body image.

The Swan drew even more international criticism after British comedian and writer Charlie Brooker attacked it on Channel 4's You Have Been Watching, with guest Josie Long suggesting that the show be renamed "The Bullies Were Right."  The show was named the worst reality television show ever generated by Entertainment Weekly in 2010.
