The Witcher

The Witcher is a TV show on Netflix that falls under the fantasy drama genre. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is the creator of the show, and it takes inspiration from the book series with the same title by Polish author, Andrzej Sapkowski. The show is set in a fictional, medieval-inspired landmass called the Continent and delves into the tale of Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Princess Ciri.

Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan are the stars of the show. The first season, which consists of eight episodes, was released on Netflix on December 20, 2019. It is based on two collections of short stories, namely The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, which predate the primary The Witcher saga.

The Witcher Season 3 Episode 5 Recap And Ending Explained

In this episode, the outcome unfolds through a repeated sequence that reveals new information each time. However, the ultimate revelation feels disappointingly predictable, making this finale the most tedious installment of the first volume.

The party setting adds a weird and somewhat detrimental cattiness, with hidden agendas, fancy outfits, a grand dance, and even a fistfight between jealous love rivals that temporarily transforms "The Witcher" into a reminiscent of "Real Housewives of the Continent," introducing a level of campiness not typically seen in the show.

Surprisingly, there is very little to recap for the majority of the episode. Geralt, Yennefer, Istredd, and Triss all suspect that Stregobor is collaborating with Rience and kidnapping young, half-elf novices from Aretuza. They engage in loaded conversations with various characters to gather evidence and prove their suspicions. For example, Geralt and Istredd stage a fight over Yennefer, which is later revealed to be a diversion allowing Yennefer to search Stregobor's private quarters for a book on Monoliths.

However, the diversion was so obvious the first time it happened that the additional reveal feels pointless, reminiscent of an unnecessary Ocean's Eleven-style twist. During Yennefer's investigation of Stregobor's room, she discovers the book and ample evidence supporting the theory of his involvement in the girls' kidnappings. When Stregobor's absence is noticed, everyone gathers to formally accuse him, and Tissaia takes possession of the book for safekeeping.

Later on, the real twist arrives. Geralt and Yennefer piece together various clues and have a profound realization. Yennefer recalls a conversation with Philippa mentioning Lydia, and when she describes Lydia's injuries, Geralt remembers Teryn's mention of "the woman with the funny voice." They both deduce simultaneously that Vilgefortz is the true villain.

However, these clues were already shown to the viewers, so the characters are merely catching up to information that was already obvious to us. Even after this revelation, a confrontation with Vilgefortz is denied. As Geralt attempts to confront him, he is stopped by Dijkstra, who holds a knife to his throat, leaving the episode and the first volume to end on this cliffhanger.

The Witcher Season 3 Episode 5 Plot

The upcoming season of The Witcher is set to adapt Andrzej Sapkowski's second Witcher Saga novel, Time of Contempt. The story revolves around the political intrigue at Thanedd Island, which erupts into an open coup, drawing Geralt of Rivia into the midst of the chaos. Meanwhile, Yennefer's attempts to train Ciri in magic go awry, leading to Ciri being separated from her guardians.

Unexpectedly, Cahil's arc takes a different direction as he becomes allied with Geralt the Witcher, rather than being opposed to him. The official synopsis from Netflix reveals that Geralt will take Cintra into hiding, with Yennefer's assistance, as they try to evade various threats such as beasts, monarchs, mages, and the Wild Hunt. While Season 2 of The Witcher adapted the events from Blood of Elves but deviated from the source material, it also revealed the truth about Ciri's parentage earlier than the novels.

This departure from the books has been a point of contention among long-time readers and fans who desire a more faithful adaptation. Nevertheless, the overarching narrative of Emhyr/Duny's search for his daughter remains a central focus in the third season. New images released for Season 3 provide some insights. In one image, Yennefer is seen walking away from Geralt, prompting him to draw his weapon. In another image, Geralt, wearing a hood, stands beside Yennefer, who dons a lace mask.

They witness Beltane, a fertility celebration. As it has been revealed that this will be Henry Cavill's final season as Geralt, and that Geralt will be leaving his role as a Witcher, the implications of this decision on Geralt's relationship with Yennefer remain to be seen.
