The Witcher Season 3 Trailer

The Witcher Season 3 Plot

"The official synopsis for season 3 of The Witcher states that as rulers, sorcerers, and creatures of the Continent vie to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to safeguard his reunited family from those who seek to destroy it. Yennefer, entrusted with Ciri's magical training, leads them to the fortified stronghold of Aretuza, hoping to uncover the extent of the girl's latent powers. However, they soon find themselves embroiled in a battlefield rife with political corruption, dark magic, and betrayal, forcing them to fight back and risk everything or face the possibility of losing one another forever.

Season 3 of The Witcher will delve deeper into Ciri's fate following the cliffhangers of season 2, which revealed the Wild Hunt's pursuit of Ciri due to her possession of the 'Hen Ikeir' (Elder Blood) and her potential to restore the elves' former glory. As Geralt stated in season 2, Ciri is marked for something greater, and her dangers extend beyond the Wild Hunt. Mages and royalty, upon discovering her survival and her extraordinary abilities, will stop at nothing to find her.

Future episodes will feature a tense hunt for Ciri, with Yennefer and Geralt scrambling to protect her. The main trio becomes intertwined in an epic storyline. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich disclosed to TechRadar that the third season draws inspiration from the book The Time of Contempt. In this installment, Yennefer, Ciri, and Geralt embark on a journey to Aretuza, where Ciri will learn to harness her magical potential.

Hissrich expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating that the scripting phase is nearly complete and that she is thrilled with how the season is shaping up, particularly because it is based on her favorite book in the saga, The Time of Contempt. She emphasized that the first two seasons have laid the groundwork for the monumental events about to unfold. As the creative process now commences, the scripts will be brought to life with the involvement of directors and the returning cast, ensuring a perfect season."

What Happened in The Witcher Season 2?

"The writers faced a daunting task in Season 2 as they had to address the unresolved cliffhangers and storylines from Season 1. In the first half of the season, Ciri and Geralt embark on a journey to Kaer Morhen, which results in an awkward father-daughter dynamic. Yennefer's apparent demise shocks everyone, but it is later revealed that she is actually alive.

Yennefer loses her magic after encountering a trapped demon and a powerful entity known as the deathless mother, which becomes significant later on. The war between Nilfgaard and Cintra introduces us to Francesca Findabair, an elven sorceress played by Mecia Simson, who forms an alliance with the Nilfgaardian Mage Fringilla, portrayed by Mimi Ndiweni.

However, complications arise when Francesca is discovered to be pregnant. At Kaer Morhen, Vesemir, portrayed by Kim Bodnia, discovers that Ciri's powers are a result of possessing the elder blood, a long-presumed extinct mutagen necessary for creating new witchers.

Amidst the constant plot developments, the season also delivers poignant and heart-wrenching scenes, such as Yennefer's long-awaited return to Aretuza and her emotional reunion with Tissaia, who believed her to be dead. Notably, the reintroduction of Joey Batey as Jaskier, with his captivating rendition of "Burn Butcher Burn," becomes a central highlight of the season.

The second half of Season 2 reveals that Ciri is prophesied to bring about the world's destruction and is somehow connected to scattered monoliths. She insists on undergoing the grueling witcher-making process using her own blood, but Geralt intervenes just in time.

Geralt learns that Yennefer is alive, while Yennefer discovers from the deathless mother that she can regain her powers by delivering Ciri to a malevolent force. Surprisingly, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer cross paths at the Temple of Melitele, where Ciri is supposed to be learning magic from the priestess Nenneke, portrayed by the wonderful Adjoa Andoh, known for her role in another successful Netflix series, Bridgerton.

Ciri becomes the target of a fire mage with mysterious intentions, prompting Yennefer to teach her how to use portals, leading them on a separate journey without Geralt. Yennefer helps Ciri learn some magical skills, but Ciri eventually discovers Yennefer's betrayal. However, Yennefer has a change of heart, and in a heartwarming moment, Geralt saves the day, sending Ciri back to Kaer Morhen with Jaskier and declaring to Yennefer that Ciri is now under his protection. This marks a significant development in the growth of the broody witcher since Season 1."
