Meta will be entering a competitive field of platforms, including BlueSky and Mastodon, which are vying to replace Twitter since Elon Musk took over the platform. Twitter has faced challenges, such as requiring users to log in to view the site and imposing limits on unverified accounts. BlueSky, being developed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, had to temporarily halt new sign-ups due to overwhelming demand following the implementation of rate limits. Meta's Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, mentioned in a company-wide meeting that there is demand for a Twitter alternative from creators and public figures who desire a more well-managed platform.
However, users considering joining Meta's Twitter replacement may have concerns regarding privacy. Jack Dorsey highlighted this issue by tweeting a screenshot of Threads' app privacy information with a caption that read, "All your base are belong to us."
The app has the ability to collect various forms of user data, including health information, financial details, contact information, browsing history, location, and purchase information. It is worth noting that Twitter no longer has a press department, as inquiries sent to their former email address received an auto-response in the form of a poop emoji.
