Originally, the film was planned to be filmed in the found footage style. The shooting took place in Texas, where the co-director Mark Dennis grew up, and where caves are abundant. He took inspiration from adventure movies from the 1980s, such as Indiana Jones and The Goonies, which focused on practical effects, characters, and plot.

The idea for the film's premise came from Dennis's experience of spending four years at the South Pole, and upon his return to the United States, he was surprised at how much things had changed.

Time Trap Ending Explained

In the ending of Time Trap, the humans from the future use their advanced technology to rescue the group, including the deceased, and revive them with the healing water. They all find themselves on a spaceship heading towards Mars, thousands of years in the future, and are surprisingly accepting of their fate despite having lost everything and everyone they knew, including their planet.

However, it's peculiar that they quickly adapt to their new lives given that only a few hours have passed for them, while close to 3 millennia have passed on Earth relative to the time they spent inside the time trap.

The group was inside the time trap for approximately 3 hours, which, considering that 4 seconds in the trap is equivalent to 1 year on Earth, equates to around 2700 years.

It's odd that the future humans did not show any interest in the cavemen who are millions of years older, although it should be noted that the cavemen in the Americas are not as ancient as those found in the East, with an estimated age of around 30,000 years. Nevertheless, it remains strange that future humans completely overlooked them.

Time Trap Plot

Hopper, an archaeology professor, went exploring a remote cave system in search of missing hippies from the 1970s. After discovering a cowboy frozen in place, he dismissed his graduate students, Taylor and Jackie, stating that their research was finished.

A few days later, Taylor and Jackie, along with their friends Cara, Veeves, and Furby, went to find Hopper, following his trail to a campsite by a cave. They found an entrance with climbing ropes leading inside and decided to follow it, but Furby stayed behind as backup for the base camp. They heard strange noises and when they tried to contact Furby, he did not respond.

Jackie attempted to climb back out, but the rope broke, causing her and Taylor to fall and injure themselves. They called for help and received a transmission from inside the cave, which they followed.

At a different junction, they discovered another opening to the cave and found Furby dead with a broken neck. They watched his video recordings and discovered that he had been researching the hippies' belongings, who turned out to be Hopper's parents. Hopper was searching for his missing sister, and his parents were following legends of the Fountain of Youth.

They speculated that this cave system was the root of the story. Furby found another cave opening and went to retrieve keys for a vehicle but fell when his rope broke.

Taylor concluded that the cave was inside a time distortion where events moved more slowly. With limited options, Cara free-climbed out of the cave to get a GPS signal but found that the terrain outside had become barren, and there was no signal. When she returned to the cave, comparing video recordings, Cara had experienced 30 minutes on the surface while only a few seconds had passed from their viewpoint, confirming Taylor's theory.

Upon reviewing Furby's footage again, they learned that he had survived the fall but was murdered by a caveman. They realized that time was passing much more drastically than they thought, with entire years passing within seconds, meaning that the few hours they had been in the cave was enough to span several hundred or thousand years outside.

While preparing to climb out for help, Cara was interrupted by a futuristic humanoid spaceman who descended via a retractable ladder. A caveman suddenly attacked, but was subdued without causing harm. They fled, only to discover a whole tribe of cavemen inspecting the dead bodies of the cowboy and Hopper's parents. Taylor fought the cavemen and was killed.

The spaceman returned, protected the others from the cavemen, and then placed Taylor into a healing pool of water. More cavemen attacked, and the spaceman was fatally wounded but used his dying breaths to show them several media clips about their disappearance and indicating that humans had become space-faring.

Taylor found Hopper injured in front of another time dilation, containing his long-missing sister and a legion of conquistadors battling with the cavemen over control of a waterfall, the source of the time distortion, at the center of the cave system. Hopper explained that the field was strongest here, making the rescue of his sister impossible.

He instructed Taylor to go and save the others, as he was also dying. When the students attempted to leave the cave with the spaceman's ladder, they were attacked by cavemen before they could get through. Cara was pulled through the portal by future beings before she could help her friends. From their perspective, she reappeared through the portal, differently dressed and with rope-like mechanisms that pulled her friends through.

A short time later, Furby, Hopper, and Hopper's family awakened, having been retrieved and resurrected with the healing waters. The others arrived, happily explaining that they were in a space station and had a lot to talk.

Time Trap Netflix Review

Time Trap is a surprisingly impressive movie that depicts the journey of five young students who embark on a mission to locate their lost archaeology professor. Unlike typical films, it manages to avoid cliches and captivates the audience. The professor, Hopper, is searching for a family that disappeared in the 1970s.

In Time Trap, a group of students set out to find their missing archaeology professor, who was searching for a family that disappeared in the 1970s. When the professor fails to return, two of his students and some friends decide to go after him. They end up getting stuck in a large cave with no apparent way out, as the ropes they used to enter have been cut and they've lost contact with the person left behind above ground.

To their surprise, time passes much faster inside the cave, with every second feeling like days or even weeks in the outside world. One of them manages to escape, only to find that the surrounding landscape has drastically changed. It soon becomes clear that they are trapped in a time loop.

As they search for Hopper, they encounter other inhabitants of the cave and must find a way to escape before it's too late. Time Trap is a well-written and directed film, with a clever script that blends humor and drama seamlessly. Although the cast may not be familiar, the acting is solid, making for an enjoyable movie with elements of sci-fi, fantasy, and time travel.
