Tom Jones Ending Explained
The ending of the series takes a different approach compared to the original novel by Henry Fielding. Lady Bellaston and Blifil form an alliance to bring Tom Jones down. Blifil pays Fitzpatrick to disrupt one of Lady Bellaston's parties, knowing that Tom will be present in front of Sophia. A fight ensues between Fitzpatrick and Tom, resulting in Tom stabbing Fitzpatrick and getting promptly arrested.
However, Mrs. Waters and Aunt Harriet discover Fitzpatrick's true intentions and join forces to pressure him into dropping the charges. They both leave him behind. Mrs. Waters, on the other hand, faces a more complicated situation. Partridge, recognizing her as Jenny Jones, realizes that she is likely to be Tom's biological mother. However, the truth is that Jenny took the blame as a teenager for Tom's actual mother, Bridget Blifil, who is Squire Allworthy's sister.
Learning of this revelation, Blifil becomes furious and departs from the London townhouse. Mrs. Waters stays behind to ensure that either she or Bridget tells Tom the truth, thereby relieving him of any Oedipal guilt. In the original book by Fielding, Bridget has long passed away at this point, making this reunion an addition in the adaptation. The decision to keep Bridget alive in the series was made by the producers, deviating from Fielding's original plot. This alteration allowed for a powerful and poignant scene where Tom is reunited with his mother. The presence of Bridget throughout the adaptation was deemed necessary by the production team, despite potential disapproval from die-hard Fielding fans.
