In his inaugural season, Mowbray impressed and was honored with the Scottish Football Writers' Association Manager of the Year award. He later moved on to West Bromwich Albion in 2006, where he achieved success by winning the Football League Championship in 2008. Unfortunately, the following year saw his team being relegated from the Premier League.

Mowbray then took charge of Celtic but faced dismissal after a disappointing nine-month spell due to unsatisfactory results. Following his time at Celtic, Mowbray returned to one of his former clubs, Middlesbrough, as their manager. However, he departed in October 2013 following a poor start to the 2013-14 season.

After a brief stint with Coventry City, Mowbray assumed the managerial position at Blackburn Rovers in February 2017. Despite Rovers experiencing relegation to League One, Mowbray successfully guided them back to the Championship in their very first attempt.

Tony Mowbray Injury Update

Tony Mowbray, the manager of Sunderland, has provided an injury update ahead of the team's first pre-season fixtures. Unfortunately, a number of key players and new signings will be sidelined due to injuries.

One of the new signings, Dutch defender Jenson Seelt, is currently dealing with an ankle issue that is expected to keep him out for the majority of the pre-season period. Additionally, Australian U23 defender Nectarios Triantis, who recently joined the club, has been allowed to return to Australia for a couple of weeks' break since his season for both club and country extended into June.

In addition to Seelt and Triantis, several other players will also be unavailable for the start of the new season. Midfielder Corry Evans is recovering from knee ligament injury, striker Ross Stewart is dealing with an Achilles problem, and defender Aji Alese has a thigh injury. Dennis Cirkin is still out with an ankle issue, while Elliot Embleton, who suffered a broken ankle in December, is not yet ready to return but could potentially be involved towards the end of Sunderland's pre-season trip to the United States.

Mowbray provided some insight into the players' conditions, stating that Corry Evans and Ross Stewart will not be available for the start of the season. However, he expressed optimism that Elliot Embleton might be available or play a part in the last game of the pre-season tour in the US.

Regarding the return of the injured players, Mowbray mentioned that Dennis Cirkin is not far away from returning, although his availability at the beginning of the season will be touch and go. As for Jenson Seelt, he is currently not training due to his ankle injury. Mowbray assured that the injured players will gradually filter back into the squad over the next few weeks, and although it's frustrating to be without them, he is confident they will be able to join as the season progresses. Players like Elliot Embleton may even start training before the American trip.

What Happened to Tony Mowbray?

During May 2022, Tony Mowbray has left his position as Blackburn manager after spending five years at the club. He was the longest-serving manager in the Championship at the time of his departure. Mowbray had a sense that his departure was imminent, as he stated that there had been no conversations, approaches, or discussions regarding his future, despite the season being just a week away from concluding.

Blackburn Rovers have officially announced that their manager, Tony Mowbray, will be departing the club once his existing contract concludes this summer. Blackburn had a promising start to the season but ultimately fell short of promotion to the Premier League and the Championship playoffs.

They finished in eighth place, winning only five of their last 20 matches. Mowbray, 58, previously led the club out of League One in 2018 but was unable to maintain their position in the second tier after joining midway through the season. During his tenure at Blackburn, Mowbray achieved two 15th-place finishes and one 11th-place finish in the Championship before their most successful campaign this year.

However, with his contract set to expire in the summer, Mowbray foresaw his departure from Ewood Park. In his statement, Mowbray expressed his surprise at the lack of communication regarding his future, given the imminent end of the season.
