In the campaign mode, players maneuver armies and characters across the map while managing settlements in a turn-based fashion. They engage in diplomatic relations and battles against AI-controlled factions. When armies clash, the battles unfold in real-time. The game offers a custom battles mode, enabling players to design personalized real-time battles, including engaging in online multiplayer battles. Players owning races from the previous games can access the same races for multiplayer in Total War: Warhammer III. It introduces a combined world map called "Immortal Empires," resembling the "Mortal Empires" campaign in Total War: Warhammer II, providing an expansive gaming experience.
The races featured in the game encompass the human civilizations of Grand Cathay, inspired by Imperial China, and Kislev, reflecting Medieval Russia. In the wintry realm of Kislev, a land kept in balance by Ursun, the Bear-God's roar ushering in summer, a silence of seven years has brought an endless winter.
