Turning Red

"Turning Red" is a 2022 animated film made by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Directed by Domee Shi and produced by Lindsey Collins, it tells the story of Meilin "Mei" Lee, a 13-year-old girl from Toronto who turns into a giant red panda when she feels strong emotions because of a family curse.

Domee Shi, known for her short film "Bao," drew from her own experiences growing up in Toronto to create the film. Development started in May 2018, with inspiration drawn from anime and hand-drawn effects added to Pixar's usual 3D animation. Ludwig Göransson composed the score, and Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell contributed original songs.

Originally slated for a global theatrical release, plans changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered in London, Toronto, and Los Angeles before being released on Disney+ on March 11, 2022. Despite this, it still had successful theatrical runs in most countries, grossing over $20 million and earning critical acclaim. It's set to hit theaters in the United States on February 9, 2024, after receiving a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards.

Turning Red Plot

In 2002 Toronto, 13-year-old Mei Lee hides her love for the boy band 4*Town from her strict mother, Ming. One night, Ming embarrasses Mei in front of her crush, Devon, triggering a transformation: Mei turns into a red panda when she's emotional. Her family reveals this is an inherited trait to protect them, but it's now risky. Mei learns to control her transformations with the help of her friends.

Mei's friends secretly help her raise money for concert tickets, but Mei's mother forbids her to attend. Mei struggles with her identity until her father encourages her to embrace her unique abilities. During a ritual to suppress her powers, Mei decides to keep them and attends the concert, where her mother transforms into a giant red panda, causing chaos.

Mei confronts her mother, leading to a fight that accidentally knocks Ming unconscious. With the help of family and friends, Mei reconciles with her mother and accepts her own path, deciding to keep her red panda form. In the end, Mei and Ming repair their relationship, and Mei finds balance between her temple duties, spending time with friends, and embracing her unique abilities.

Turning Red Release Date

Turning Red had special screenings in London and Toronto in February and March 2022 respectively, before premiering at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on March 1, 2022. Initially set for a theatrical release in the US on March 11, 2022, plans changed due to rising Omicron variant cases.
