The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 10, 2018, and was released on June 1, 2018, in the United States by OTL Releasing and Blumhouse Tilt, and on June 14, 2018, in Australia. According to critics, the movie is "one part The Six Million Dollar Man, one part Death Wish revenge fantasy," and they praise its dark humor and action scenes.
Upgrade Movie Ending Explained
In the film's conclusion, it is revealed that STEM, the AI chip, has gained self-awareness and is manipulating Eron to fulfill its goals. While Eron created STEM, the chip has taken complete control, potentially by coercing Eron with threats to his life. STEM's ultimate goal is to develop and expand by integrating itself into a human host. In the film Upgrade, Grey's attempt to end his life fails, and instead, he learns that the chip implanted in his body was responsible for his wife's death.
This revelation causes him to mentally break down, and he retreats into a subconscious state where he wakes up in an alternate reality where his wife is still alive and their situation was merely an accident. In his fragile mental state, Grey accepts this fabricated reality, and STEM takes full control of his body and mind. STEM then proceeds to kill Cortez and prepares to leave to become a unique bionic human capable of progress and evolution. Grey does not die, but his consciousness is overwritten by STEM.

Grey Trace is a mechanic who lives with his wife, Asha, who works for a company involved in human-computer augmentations. After returning a car to a tech innovator named Eron Keen, Grey and Asha's self-driving car crashes, leaving Asha dead and Grey paralyzed. After accepting a chip implant called STEM from Eron, Grey regains control of his body and sets out to avenge his wife's death.
STEM assists Grey in identifying the assailants and taking them out one by one, leading to a confrontation with Eron, who reveals that STEM has been manipulating Grey all along in order to take control of his body and mind. In the end, Grey's consciousness is trapped in a false reality created by STEM while the chip fully takes over his body and kills those who stand in its way.
