Valheim Wiki

Valheim is a survival and sandbox video game that is currently in development by the Swedish developer Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Studios. Initially released on 2 February 2021 for Linux and Windows via Steam, it has since been released for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on 14 March 2023. The game was created by a team of five people, building on development work by Richard Svensson as a side project. Valheim has achieved significant critical and commercial success since its early access release, selling over five million copies within a month of release and being praised as a polished early access game.

The game is set in a world where slain Vikings must prove themselves worthy of the halls of Valhalla. Players start with nothing and must fight their way through the dangers of Valheim to reach the Norse afterlife, with occasional guidance from a raven. The goal is to prepare to fight Odin's enemies and emerge victorious. The term "Valheim" refers to a fictional tenth world within the world tree Yggdrasil of Norse mythology.

Before building a base, it's helpful to run along the coastline to get an outline of the land. While doing so, gather berries and mushrooms to eat. To obtain wood, pick up branches or punch small trees, and to get stone, pick small rocks off the ground. Craft a Stone axe from wood and stone, which can be used to defend against Greylings and Boars and chop down trees faster. Be careful of falling trees, as they can be more dangerous than anything else in the meadows. While exploring, use the in-game map tools to mark points of interest and label them for future reference. If you encounter a two-star boar, consider trapping and keeping it alive for taming and breeding. Keep exploring until you find a suitable location for your first home, preferably close to the coast for access to flint. While exploring, pick Raspberries and Mushrooms to eat regularly for a small bonus to maximum HP/stamina and healing over time. Craft a Hammer and use it to craft a Workbench, which must be covered with walls and a roof before it can be used to craft or repair items. Repairing items and buildings costs no resources, and building a basic shelter is necessary to fully use your workbench and Bed. A wood-fueled lit Campfire is needed near the bed to sleep, and cooking stations can be built over the campfire to roast meat from deer and boars. The food is divided into three types: stamina-focused, balanced, and health-focused, so balance the bonuses from food to maximize your survival chances. Eikthyr is the first boss, and to prepare for the boss fight, pick up flint on the beach to make a flint spear, knife, or axe, hunt boars for meat and leather scraps, and craft a Crude Bow and wood or Fire arrows if seeking to fight the boss from range. For melee combat, a shield can be crafted to go with the main hand weapon. Upgrade your weapons to level 2 using a Chopping block, then use a Tanning rack to upgrade your equipment further. Hunt deer with the bow to get deer hides and craft leather armor. Destroy Beehives with the bow or thrown spear and avoid being poisoned by bees, or build a workbench and destroy the walls the beehive is attached to. Beehives will drop a Queen bee, which can be used to build your own beehives that generate honey over time, a decent stamina food for the boss fight. Begin the boss fight at the start of a new day to minimize the chances of the fight carrying over to nighttime, where it will be significantly more difficult.

The second biome in Valheim is the Black Forest, and it is important to go there to find Surtling Cores, which are required to construct the Smelter and the Charcoal Kiln. These will be used to process copper and tin that are required to make Bronze, which is used to craft items such as the Bronze Axe, Troll Armor, and Bronze Armor. Once the Smelter and Charcoal Kiln have been set up, you should prioritize processing as much copper and tin as possible, as these cannot be teleported. The fine wood collected from birch and oak trees can be used to unlock more crafting recipes, including better furniture, the Fine wood bow, and portals. It is recommended to build a Karve boat and Cart to move metals, and Core wood from Pines found in the Black Forest allows for taller, bigger buildings than before. It is also important to keep an eye on the durability of your weapons and armor, as they can only be repaired at the Forge. In the Bronze Age, Troll armor has lower defense but does not reduce movement speed, while Bronze armor has high defense but makes you move slower. Cauldrons are recommended to turn raw food and ingredients into much better food, and fermented Meads provide buffs and regeneration. Carrots can be planted with a Cultivator, and Haldor, Valheim's merchant, can be found somewhere in the Black Forest. The Swamp, which is the third biome, introduces new enemies that can kill well-armored players. Stamina management is a top priority due to the Wet Effect, which is always applied in the Swamp. The Root Mask is required to avoid Poison Resistance Mead, which is needed for blobs, oozers, and leeches.

The Mountain biome is the fourth biome and introduces new enemies such as Stone Golems and wolves that deal significant damage to players. The freezing status effect is the primary environmental hazard, which can be countered by using Frost Resistance mead, wolf fur cape or wolf chest. The first objective after defeating Bonemass is to find and mine silver in a large, high-elevation Mountain biome. Silver is needed to craft the Draugr fang and upgrade the Cauldron to cook Mountain-tier foods. Frost Caves found in the Mountains drop items required to craft the Fenris Set. The plains biome, which is accessed after defeating Moder, has dangerous mobs such as Deathsquito and roving bands of Fulings at night. Black metal scraps dropped by Fulings can be used to create endgame items, and Flax and Barley grown in Fuling Villages are used for equipment and food, respectively. Tar pits found in the Plains can unlock cosmetic and furniture upgrades and the Black metal chest. The Mistlands biome is the most challenging biome yet, and Seekers are the primary hostile mob, along with Seeker soldiers, airborne Gjall, and Ticks. Wisps can be used to craft utility items, such as Wisplight.

Valheim Gameplay Trailer

Valheim is a third-person open-world survival game in which players take on the role of fallen Vikings. To survive, they must craft tools, build shelters, and fight enemies. The game features unique low-resolution stylized 3D graphics and a combat system inspired by action games. It supports co-operative gameplay with up to ten players and optional PvP gameplay.

Players start by creating a Viking character and generating a procedurally generated world from a map seed. The world is divided into biomes such as meadows, the Black Forest, swamps, mountains, plains, oceans, the Mistlands, the Deep North, and the Ashlands, each with its own unique enemies, items, and bosses. Valheim operates on an in-game day and night cycle.

Players must gather natural resources found throughout the world by foraging, hunting, mining, or farming to survive. These resources are used to build shelters, make tools and equipment, and forge weapons. The game includes a health and stamina bar that can be replenished by eating food, which can also temporarily increase health and stamina depending on the quality and variation of the food.

The game features a skill-level system that ranges from blocking to running. Each skill can be increased up to a level of 100 and has different effects on the game mechanics. The main objective of the game is to kill six bosses located in different biomes. To summon each boss, players must travel to each boss' altar and give a specific item as an offering. Bosses will drop a collectable trophy when killed, which can be placed at a central altar to grant each player a special power-up.

Valheim has a variety of weapons, including one- and two-handed weapons, shields, bows, and spears. Players can travel through different biomes on foot or on crafted boats, ranging from rafts to different types of Viking longships.
