Valorant

Valorant is a tactical first-person shooter game that is free-to-play, developed and published by Riot Games for Windows. It was first teased with the name Project A in October 2019, and after a closed beta period with limited access starting from April 7, 2020, it was released on June 2, 2020. The development of Valorant began in 2014, and it is inspired by the Counter-Strike series of tactical shooters, featuring several borrowed mechanics such as the buy menu and spray patterns, as well as elements like inaccuracy while moving.

Valorant, which was developed and published by the same studio that created League of Legends, Riot Games, began its development in 2014 under their research and development division. The game was conceptualized by Joe Ziegler, Valorant's game director while working alongside other developers at Riot Games to formulate possible games.

The creative director for Valorant is David Nottingham, and the game designers include Trevor Romleski, a former designer for League of Legends, and Salvatore Garozzo, a former professional player and map designer for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Additionally, Moby Francke, a former Valve developer, who has worked as an art and character designer for Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, serves as the art director for Valorant.

Valorant, a free-to-play first-person tactical hero shooter developed and published by Riot Games, was developed using Unreal Engine 4 to allow the team to focus on gameplay and optimizations rather than developing core systems 1. To make the game accessible to more people, the team set low minimum and recommended hardware requirements, which necessitated modifications to the engine by the game's engineering team to reach 30 frames per second on these requirements. The modifications included editing the renderer using the engine's mobile rendering path as the base and reworking the game's lighting systems to suit tactical shooters' requirements.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic's increase in internet traffic, Riot faced some difficulties in optimizing connections and ping to their promised levels. Despite these difficulties, Valorant's development team's efforts allowed them to create a game that is accessible to a broader range of people without compromising the competitive environment. Thus, it delivered on its promises of delivering low pings through various means while maintaining its competitive environment.

Valorant Update 6.08 Patch Notes

Valorant Episode 6 Act 3 is on the horizon, with several updates such as the return of Bind to the competitive queue, a new battle pass, bug fixes, and quality of life improvements in the pipeline.

AGENT UPDATES

GEKKO

  • Wingman
  • Enhancement of Wingman's (Q) plant and defuse audio.
  • In chaotic combat scenarios, the sound cues for Wingman's spike and defuse were indistinct. This modification will improve their audibility.
  • We have revised the in-game portrait of Gekko to enhance gameplay clarity and visual coherence.

KILLJOY

As Killjoy's prominence in the meta has increased, we have identified a few aspects where her abilities could be improved in their interactions with other players and the game environment. To address this, we have modified some of her audio cues to make them more discernible and to indicate more clearly when her utility has been disabled. Furthermore, we have expanded the reveal radius on Nanoswarm (C) to match its damage area, making it more realistic and easier for enemies to track moving targets. We will closely monitor this balance point in the future. Lastly, we have removed the yellow warning indicator added to Lockdown (X) in the previous patch. It proved too distracting on the screen for the entire duration of her ultimate's windup.

  • The reveal radius of Nanoswarm has been raised from 350 to 525.

  • Enemy players now receive better feedback when they successfully destroy Nanoswarm.
  • Nanoswarm is now visible when it is deactivated.

Valorant Gameplay

Valorant is a team-based first-person tactical hero shooter that takes place in the near future. The game features a diverse set of playable characters called Agents, each inspired by different countries and cultures around the world. In the primary game mode, players are split into attacking and defending teams, with each team consisting of five players.

Each Agent possesses unique abilities that require charges, as well as an ultimate ability that requires charging through various means. At the start of each round, players are equipped with a "classic" pistol and a certain number of "signature ability" charges. Additional weapons and ability charges can be purchased using an in-game economic system that rewards money based on the outcome of the previous round, kills, and objectives completed.

The game features a wide range of weapons, including submachine guns, shotguns, machine guns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles, each with a distinct shooting pattern that players must learn to control for accurate shooting.

Currently, the game offers 20 playable Agents, including Brimstone, Viper, Omen, Cypher, Sova, Sage, Phoenix, Jett, Raze, Breach, Reyna, Killjoy, Skye, Yoru, Astra, KAY/O, Chamber, Neon, Fade, Harbor, and Gekko. Players start with five unlocked Agents (Brimstone, Sova, Sage, Phoenix, and Jett) and must activate an Agent's contract to unlock that Agent by earning XP while playing matches.

Valorant has several game modes, including Unrated, Spike Rush, Swiftplay, Competitive, Premier, Deathmatch, and Escalation.

Unrated is the standard mode, where teams play to win 13 rounds. The attacking team must activate the Spike on one of the specified locations while the defending team must prevent them from doing so. If the attacking team manages to detonate the Spike or kills all members of the defending team, they earn a point.

Spike Rush is played in best-of-7 rounds, and all players on the attacking team carry a Spike, but only one spike may be activated per round. Swiftplay is a shortened version of Unrated, and the first team to win 5 rounds out of 9 wins.

Competitive mode has a win-based ranking system that assigns a rank to each player after five games. Players must reach level 20 before playing this mode.

Deathmatch mode is a free-for-all match where 14 players compete to get 40 kills or the most kills in 9 minutes.

The Escalation game mode is team-based, where players move through a random selection of 12 weapons to advance to the next weapon, with two winning conditions. Finally, Premier is a 5v5 game mode that allows players a path-to-pro competitive game mode that is aimed towards players that wish to be professional players.
