Vengeance Ending Explained
After successfully unlocking Abby's phone, Ben discovers that she had been exchanging texts with someone named Ben, whom she had saved in her contacts. In an attempt to confront the person, he dials the number from Abby's phone but unsurprisingly receives no response. Later, at the "Afterparty," Ben enters Sellers' tent and notices the same drugs, referred to as "oxy sticks," that were shown to him by the county sheriffs.
It becomes clear to Ben that Seller orchestrated Abilene's death to make it appear as a mere statistic, taking advantage of her overdose. Surprisingly, Seller acknowledges Ben's deduction and even admires his approach. Sensing an opportunity, Ben secretly records Seller's confession, obtaining concrete evidence of Abby's murder. However, what follows next is even more significant.
Seller skillfully turns the tables on Ben, using his own words against him, emphasizing how in America, everyone will interpret Abby's death according to their own perspectives, as that is the way things work nowadays. This statement echoes Ben's earlier conversation with Ty, where he mentioned living in the real world, where everyone does the same.
Seller further entices Ben by suggesting that without a voice, a person ceases to exist. This notion aligns with Ben's endeavor to prove his worth as a writer through his podcast, affirming his existence. Ultimately, when Seller reveals that people will look to Ben and Abby's family, blaming them for her death, Ben acknowledges that some things hold meaning.
This revelation becomes a defining moment for Ben, shaped by Seller's words and his own journey to Texas, where he realizes the importance of public perception rather than personal truth. In a moment of anger, or perhaps driven by the emotional connection he had developed with Abilene's family, her photographs, songs, and the nights spent in her room with her brother, Ben shoots and kills Seller, perhaps in response to Seller's brutal honesty.
In the film's conclusion, Ben deletes all the recordings he had gathered for his podcast. He confides in Sharon that Abby's story, her life, belongs to her family and perhaps to himself as well. He has become a part of Abby's family. When Sharon remarks that it is all regret, it reflects two aspects of Ben's current state: Abby and his podcast recordings. Both of these could have contributed to a better version of himself, albeit in different ways, but now they are lost. All that remains is a profound sense of regret.
Vengeance Plot
New York journalist Ben Manalowitz, known for his casual romantic relationships, receives a call from Ty Shaw informing him of Abby Shaw's apparent drug overdose. Intrigued by Ty's belief that Abby was murdered, Ben flies to Texas for her funeral. He meets Abby's family, joins Ty's quest for justice, and suspects drug dealer Sancholo.
In Texas, Ben encounters record producer Quentin Sellers, receives Abby's recordings, and uncovers her secret phone contact named "Ben." Learning Abby was abandoned in her time of need, Ben's car explodes and he confronts the truth. Coercing a confession from Quentin, Ben records it, shoots him, and deletes all evidence.Returning to the Shaw family, Ben reconciles with Ty and Sharon. Leaving Texas, he keeps the story private, erasing all traces of his investigation.
