Lana Wachowski (born June 21, 1965, formerly known as Larry Wachowski) and Lilly Wachowski (born December 29, 1967, formerly known as Andy Wachowski) are American films and television filmmakers, writers, and producers known together as the Wachowskis. Both of the sisters are transgender women. For most of their careers, the sisters have collaborated on writing and directing projects. They made their directorial debut with Bound in 1996 and rose to prominence with their second picture, The Matrix (1999), a massive box office blockbuster for which they received the Saturn Award for Best Director. The first prominent Hollywood filmmaker to come out as transgender, Lana earned the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award that October and made an uplifting speech about growing up transgender.
Lana said that a nun at her Catholic school assaulted her when she refused to join a line of males instead of standing between the boys and the girls because some "unconscious part" of her thought it was where she belonged. Years passed, and Lana and Lilly Wachowski established a construction company while writing films. Lana began to feel less like Larry after a while. However, the thought of coming out to her family worried her, so she worked with her therapist to devise a plan that would take between three and five years to complete.
Her mother, however, contacted her a few weeks into the plan. Lana said that losing her family was her most significant worry, but when they all welcomed her, the rest was "a piece of cake." Lilly, originally Andy Wachowski, came out as a transgender woman in March 2016. Lilly stated in a statement that she and her sister had been avoiding the press but that she knew she would have to come out in public soon. Lilly noted that she had been anticipating the headline, "Wachowski Brothers Now Sisters," with "dread and eye-rolling annoyance," mainly because the news had almost come out a few times before.
The director's agent got emails from reporters requesting responses concerning the "Andy Wachowski transition" story they were preparing to publish. Still, no one ever followed through on their threats to reveal her. A journalist from an English news service confronted Lilly at her house one day before she came out. He informed her that she needed to speak with him about her "inspiring" story.
