Both of the sisters are transgender women. For most of their careers, the sisters have collaborated on writing and directing projects. They made their directorial debut with Bound in 1996 and rose to prominence with their second picture, The Matrix (1999), a massive box office blockbuster for which they received the Saturn Award for Best Director. Wachowski Brothers Before And Now

The Wachowski sisters were formerly known as the Wachowski brothers. Lana Wachowski was known as Larry Wachowski, and Lily Wachowski was known as Andy Wachowski.

The Wachowskis are very private people who eschew notoriety in their personal life. During the peak of the Matrix trilogy's popularity, the brothers even agreed with Warner Brothers not to issue press releases. According to what is known, Lana (previously Larry) underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2008, following the premiere of "Speed Racer," and is now married to Karin Winslow. Four years after Lana, Lilly (previously Andy) came out as a transgender woman. She is still married to her 26-year companion, Alisa Blasingame. Despite their reclusiveness, the Wachowskis are strong supporters of the TransLife Centre, which assists homeless LGBT adolescents. They have garnered several honors for their efforts to address transgender concerns.

Wachowski Brothers Transition To Wachowski Sisters

While both sisters had previously transitioned from male to female, Lana Wachowski, originally Larry Wachowski, was the first. Lana made her first public appearance as a transgender woman in July 2012, after years of conjecture and whispers about a prospective transition. The first prominent Hollywood filmmaker to come out as transgender, Lana earned the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award that October and made an uplifting speech about growing up transgender.

Lana said that a nun at her Catholic school assaulted her when she refused to join a line of males instead of standing between the boys and the girls because some "unconscious part" of her thought it was where she belonged. Years passed, and Lana and Lilly Wachowski established a construction company while writing films. Lana began to feel less like Larry after a while. However, the thought of coming out to her family worried her, so she worked with her therapist to devise a plan that would take between three and five years to complete.

Her mother, however, contacted her a few weeks into the plan. Lana said that losing her family was her most significant worry, but when they all welcomed her, the rest was "a piece of cake." Lilly, originally Andy Wachowski, came out as a transgender woman in March 2016. Lilly stated in a statement that she and her sister had been avoiding the press but that she knew she would have to come out in public soon. Lilly noted that she had been anticipating the headline, "Wachowski Brothers Now Sisters," with "dread and eye-rolling annoyance," mainly because the news had almost come out a few times before.

The director's agent got emails from reporters requesting responses concerning the "Andy Wachowski transition" story they were preparing to publish. Still, no one ever followed through on their threats to reveal her. A journalist from an English news service confronted Lilly at her house one day before she came out. He informed her that she needed to speak with him about her "inspiring" story. As an out transgender person, Lilly claimed that concealing was tough, and she had not come out previously because she needed time to get her "head right." She continued, saying: "But apparently, I don't get to decide this […] So yeah, I'm transgender. And yeah, I've transitioned."

Wachowski Brothers Career

The Wachowskis went to Kellogg Elementary School and Whitney Young High School before dropping out of college to pursue their business interests, including home painting and building. The Wachowskis' Hollywood career began in 1995 as writers for the action film "Assassins," starring Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas. This provided them with new chances, and they created and directed the 1996 heist film "Bound." However, the Wachowskis' biggest breakthrough smash would come three years later, in 1999, with the publication of "The Matrix," which experienced international popularity and established the Wachowskis on the Hollywood A-list. This science-fiction/philosophical picture about a future dystopian world was a box office success, inspiring two sequels in 2003, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions." The entire series grossed more than 1 billion dollars globally, establishing their net worth.

Although The Matrix was their most successful film, the Wachowskis' net fortune may be attributed to various sources. They worked on a broad range of films as directors, producers, or screenwriters, including "V for Vendetta," "Speed Racer," "Cloud Atlas," and "Jupiter Ascending." They have written, directed, or produced nearly 20 films in all. The Wachowskis are now hard at work on the second season of their TV series "Sense8," which will be broadcast on Netflix in May 2017.
