The protagonist, an unnamed male narrator, witnesses one of these flashes through a telescope at an observatory in Ottershaw, Surrey, England. The flashes continue for several nights until a "falling star" crashes on Horsell Common, near the narrator's home in Maybury. The object, made of metal and appearing to be hollow, is suspected to have come from Mars. When the narrator visits the crash site again, the cylinder opens, revealing the first glimpse of the Martians. As military forces arrive on the scene, fighting breaks out between the soldiers and the Martians, and a second cylinder lands nearby. The narrator and his wife set out on a journey to Leatherhead, hoping to find safety from the invasion.
