Gun violence has once again struck America, this time at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. According to authorities, a 25-year-old employee named Connor Sturgeon, opened fire on his colleagues, killing five and injuring eight others. The attack occurred during a morning employee meeting, with some present in-person and others virtually. The incident was livestreamed on Instagram, and the video has been taken down. Police have the footage in their possession.

Sturgeon was an intern at the Old National Bank for three consecutive summers before joining full-time in June 2021. He had worked at the bank for more than a year but was notified that he was going to be terminated, according to a law enforcement source. Sturgeon wrote a note to his parents and a friend indicating that he was going to open fire in the bank. It is not clear whether the note was seen before or after the attack, according to the source.

Police arrived at the bank within three minutes of being dispatched and found Sturgeon still firing. They engaged in a shootout with him, and he was killed in the exchange. The firearm used was an AR-15-style rifle, a semi-automatic rifle that is very popular in the US. According to the 2021 National Firearms Survey, about 24.6 million people own an AR-15 or a similarly styled rifle.

The victims were identified as Joshua Barrick, Juliana Farmer, Tommy Elliott, James Tutt, and Deana Eckert. Eckert died later in the evening, bringing the death toll to five. The injured include a 26-year-old police officer who graduated from the academy just 10 days ago and was shot in the head.

Mass shootings have become a uniquely American phenomenon, and this incident is just the latest. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 145 mass shootings in the US this year. The AR-15 and its offshoots have been the weapon of choice in many of the most heinous mass shootings in recent memory.

Sturgeon's former high school classmate, who asked not to be identified, said that he never saw any red flags or signals that this could ever happen. He described Sturgeon as a really good kid who came from a good family. In a 2018 college essay posted to CourseHero, Sturgeon wrote about having trouble fitting in at school and his struggles with self-esteem.
