After moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan, she stopped creating new music and began working as a secretary and later as an editor for the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

As her depression worsened, she withdrew from her friends and even spent time in London, but upon her return, her condition remained the same. She went on a trip to Alaska with her mother, which she did not want to go on, and had to have a hysterectomy, both of which may have contributed to her depression. In the summer of 1974, just after her 50th birthday, Connie disappeared after getting into her Volkswagen Beetle.

Although it is not certain what happened to her, her brother Phil suspected that she may have committed suicide, based on her attitude towards the topic and her past reactions to similar situations. Despite her disappearance, Connie's music has continued to live on in the music world.

Who is Connie Converse?

Connie Converse, born Elizabeth Eaton Converse on August 3, 1924, was an American singer-songwriter and musician who gained recognition in the 1950s music scene in New York City.

She is considered to be one of the earliest singer-songwriters in music history. In 1974, Converse left her family home and disappeared without a trace. It wasn't until 2004, when her music was featured on a radio show, that she gained posthumous recognition. In 2009, a compilation album of her work titled How Sad, How Lovely was released.

Connie Converse Disappearance

In 1973, Converse was feeling exhausted and depressed. Her work with The Journal of Conflict Resolution, which had been very important to her, moved to Yale without her knowledge at the end of 1972.

Hoping to lift her spirits, her colleagues and friends raised money to send her on a six-month trip to England, but it did not help. Later, her mother asked her to join her on a trip to Alaska, which Converse reluctantly agreed to. She was already feeling devastated by the news from doctors that she needed a hysterectomy.

Just after her 50th birthday in August 1974, Converse wrote a series of letters to her family and friends, stating her desire to start a new life elsewhere. In the letters, she expressed her fascination, awe, grief, and joy at human society, but lamented her inability to find her place in it.

She included a check with her letter to Philip, asking him to make sure her health insurance was paid for a certain period of time, but to stop paying it on a specific date.

Converse was expected to go on a family trip to a lake, but she had already left in her Volkswagen Beetle, taking all of her belongings with her. She did not make contact with anyone after leaving and her fate remains unknown.

Several years later, someone reported seeing a phone book listing for "Elizabeth Converse" in either Kansas or Oklahoma, but her brother Philip did not pursue the lead.

The family hired a private investigator to find her about ten years after she disappeared, but he told them that it was her right to disappear, and he could not force her to return. Philip believes that she may have taken her own life, possibly by driving her car into a body of water, but it is still uncertain what happened to her.
