The 36-year-old French tennis player cited a strained left wrist as the reason for his withdrawal. Despite battling through a marathon match against Sebastian Baez on Court Philippe Chatrier, which lasted almost four hours, Monfils emerged victorious with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 in the first round. However, the late finish at 12:18 a.m. local time took a toll on his physical well-being.

While Monfils stated that he felt physically fine, he expressed that the issue with his wrist was insurmountable. He had sought medical advice, and the doctors concluded that playing with such an injury would not be advisable. Considering the risk involved, Monfils ultimately decided to withdraw from the tournament.

Throughout his career, Monfils has achieved notable success at the French Open. He reached the semifinals in 2008 and advanced to the quarterfinals on three other occasions, highlighting his proficiency on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

Gael Monfils French Open

Day 4 of the French Open brought disappointment for the local players as none of them managed to secure victories in their respective singles matches. Six French players bid farewell to the tournament on that day.

In the men's singles event, Luka Van Assche, Corentin Moutet, Lucas Pouille, and Ugo Humbert faced defeats against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Andrey Rublev, Cameron Norrie, and Lorenzo Sonego, respectively.

Caroline Garcia, who held the highest ranking among French singles players, saw her journey in the tournament come to an end in the second round. The World No. 5 suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 loss against Anna Blinkova.

Adding to the disappointment, Gael Monfils withdrew from the French Open. The 36-year-old was slated to compete against the sixth seed, Holger Rune, in the second round. However, Monfils made the decision to withdraw due to a wrist issue.

"I am unable to overcome a problem with my wrist. After undergoing examinations, the doctor advised against playing and recommended that I stop," explained Monfils. As a result, Rune received a bye to the third round and awaits the winner of the match between Genaro Alberto Olivieri and Andrea Vavassori.
