Towards the last year of high school, Katie suffered from health problems related to an appendectomy, and she was stressed. Katie's parents lost their jobs. Katie's boyfriend also broke up with her on March 25, 2014. 

The report says that an upset Katie left school early and went to her older brother Robert's house. Robert informed Katie's mom Alesia that she was out of school. When Alesia arrived, Robert heard a sound similar to a door shut. The bathroom door was shut when they went inside, and Katie was inside the bathroom.
