What Happened to Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead?

In Season 9, Episode 6 titled "What Comes After," Rick, who was injured, was abruptly taken away by a CRM helicopter summoned by Anne. At this stage, the CRM (Civic Republic Military) was not a significant focus in The Walking Dead universe and wouldn't become prominent until the spinoff series, World Beyond. The audience had limited knowledge about the CRM, with the prevailing understanding being that it was a mysterious community shrouded in secrecy.

Fear the Walking Dead even dedicated an entire episode to exploring the CRM, but it offered cryptic explanations without providing concrete answers. Therefore, what exactly did The Walking Dead reveal about this enigmatic group? Interestingly, it didn't provide much information, and surprisingly, that was acceptable.

In the final moments of the episode "Rest in Peace," the narrative alternated between Rick and Michonne writing heartfelt letters to their loved ones, urging them to persevere even in the face of hopelessness.  Rick walked barefoot along a muddy riverbank, carrying a bag and leaving behind his cowboy boots—an unwise choice that exposed him to the risk of foot infections.

When he heard the sound of a helicopter approaching, he hastily loaded his belongings onto a nearby boat. A voice from the helicopter called out, "Consignee Grimes, you have been located and are instructed to surrender." Frustrated, Rick reluctantly surrendered, and the voice added, "Come on, Rick. It's like she told you: there's no escape for the living."

Does Rick Grimes Die in The Walking Dead?

In the series, Rick serves as the leader of the primary group of survivors. Although his decisions didn't always yield the intended results, he consistently aimed to prioritize the well-being of the group. However, in Season 9, Rick made a momentous sacrifice. To protect his loved ones, he detonated a bridge to prevent a massive horde of walkers from infiltrating their communities.

Spectators presumed he perished in the explosion, unaware that he was actually propelled away and subsequently taken by the Civic Republic (CR).  Only Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and the viewers were privy to this revelation. This marked Rick's final appearance in the flagship series until the series finale, which aired on November 20, 2022.

During the concluding episode's coda scene, Rick resurfaced alongside Michonne (Danai Gurira), offering a brief glimpse into their lives. These scenes unveiled that Rick had been held captive by the CR but managed to escape, a discovery that occurred years later when Michonne embarked on a quest to find him. Furthermore, viewers witnessed a CRM helicopter locating Rick, leading to the assumption that he was once again captured by the organization.
