American actor, producer, and director Robert Michael Urich worked in film, television, theater, and other media. He appeared in a record-breaking 15 television programmes during the course of his 30-year career. Early in the 1970s, Urich started his television career. He gained a co-starring role in the action/crime drama series S.W.A.T. in 1975 after guest appearances and parts in brief-lived television programmes. He was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards after landing the lead role of Dan Tanna in the ABC crime drama series Vega$ in 1978. The show ran from 1978 until June 1981.

Urich was diagnosed of synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects soft tissue, in 1996 while he was still a lead actor in The Lazarus Man. He was an actor recognised for playing challenging roles, and he battled the illness without letting his acting career suffer. He accepted a role as an advocate for cancer research while receiving treatment, winning him the Gilda Radner Courage Award. He established the Urich Fund with his late wife, Heather Menzies-Urich, who passed away from complications related to brain cancer, in order to assist the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center in obtaining funding for cancer research.

He declared himself cancer-free in 1998. However, lumps were found in his body in 2001, but a "miraculous" medicine removed them.
