What Happened to Roxy Mitchell in EastEnders?

On New Year's Day in 2017, Roxy Mitchell passed away along with her sister Ronnie Mitchell. Despite Ronnie's plans to relocate to Ongar with her husband Jack Branning, and their children Matthew Cotton, Ricky Mitchell, and Amy, Roxy struggled with drug abuse and heavy drinking.

At a New Year's Eve celebration, Roxy caused a scene and contacted her mother Glenda Mitchell, and half-brother Danny Mitchell to pick her up. Although initially hesitant to attend Ronnie and Jack's wedding, Roxy eventually reconciled with her sister and urged her to be truthful about her desire for Roxy to accompany them to Ongar.

After coming clean to Jack, the couple agreed to have Roxy join them, and they celebrated their wedding alongside their loved ones.

How Did Roxy Mitchell Die?

On New Year's Day in 2017, the two sisters met a tragic end by drowning. The episode began with a happy occasion as Ronnie prepared to wed Jack Branning, but the day quickly took a turn for the worse when Roxy, who had been drinking, decided to go for a swim and found herself struggling.

Ronnie jumped in to save her but was weighed down by her dress, and both sisters perished in the water. Three months later, Sean O'Connor, the executive producer of Eastenders, explained why the characters had to die rather than simply leave Walford.

He stated that Ronnie and Roxy were not the type of characters who would leave quietly and that the show wanted to give them a grand, dramatic ending.
